Thanksgiving church services?

Post by JohnH »

Does your church have a special service on Thanksgiving or the night before?

Tell us a bit about it.

We will be having a "layman's" service since the ordained men are all away. The men of the congregation will get up and take turns sharing something. Who knows, maybe one of the women will get up too...

Not an official church meeting (certainly not a "service"), but our elder has had a standing tradition for several years to invite people to their house for Thanksgiving. This is a blanket invitation to members and visitors and anyone else they rub shoulders with in the neighborhood.

We won't be attending this year as my wife invited family to ours. But I am really happy we have that happening anyway. Lots of people from around and a few from far away will be there.

The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly.

Many warm memories of families who invited me over for Thanksgiving

Once, when we were all single, a group of us got together and “joined” a family who was willing to put up with us.

This year, we will be with my folks, 3 out of 4 children will be there, 7 of the grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. It is my mother’s favorite holiday

The local ministerial association often organizes a community service on the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving, which the churches take turns hosting. Most of the churches participate except the RC, SDA, Beachy, and Pentecostal congregations. Sometimes, like this year, the association is less active and nothing gets done, or an Advent or Christmas-season service is planned instead.

The church I currently attend is having a Thanksgiving service Wednesday evening. All the churches in the district are invited to attend. I don't think I've ever attended a Thanksgiving service before. I believe one church in the district would have a Christmas service in the church I grew up in.

Our church hosted a community meal/Thanksgiving celebration. We made posters for local stores, distributed flyers and invited friends and neighbors. There was plenty of food, a little Bible reading and a little singing.
