Top ethnic foods that Americans crave most?

Post by steve-in-kville »

Simple poll. Vote for your favorites. I realize we have a handful of members in other countries, you're welcome to vote as well. I wanted to add Canadian to the list (Ioves me a good Poutine!) but ran out of room. Feel free to comment on favorites not listed.

I clicked many of them, but I'm not sure I even know what ethnic French food really is

It probably has lots of cream or butter in it.

The French give their food unpronounceable fancy names to disguise that it's really just snails, goose liver, stew, pancakes, or sauerkraut.

It's also some of the most delicious food I have ever tasted. Every time I am with the wife's family in San Francisco I give thanks that I had the good fortune to marry into a French family. This summer we are traveling to Lyon so that our children can meet their extended French family. I cannot wait for the food.

I tend not to think of Italian food as being very ethnic these days. At least not pizza, spaghetti, lasagna, rustic bread, etc.

My experience with French food is that it is mostly ordinary fare like chicken or fish with a side of vegetables but prepared with fancier sauces and with fancier prices to match. The problem with French cuisine in this country is that it always comes with a big price tag. I expect if you visit France you can find all kinds of inexpensive local cafes serving great food but that sort of thing is very rare here.

One type of ethnic food that seems to be fading from the American scene is German food. There is a German restaurant near my house and it is something of a curiosity these days because it is so rare. They do up a Bavarian beer garden with wurst, kraut, schnitzel, fondu, etc. and it is mostly retired folks who go there. When I was a kid I remember a lot more German restaurants around. Maybe if you are in Milwaukee they are still common, but most of them out here have long since closed and have been replaced by Asian or Mexican fare.

When my wife and I go out to eat we mostly go to places which serve food that we wouldn't ever attempt to make at home. Like Asian, middle eastern, or Indian food. I can cook pasta and make a salad at home. I don't need to spend $20 for a plate of pasta and a Caesar salad in a restaurant.

I'm glad you have had good experiences with French food. I have not. I've been to France multiple times and cannot remember a meal that rose above "meh" -- but then again, I don't go to expensive restaurants and haven't had authentic home cooking. Catering on Air France is particularly unspectacular, even in business class. Pastries and desserts can be good, though.
