That’s a fair question. How would or do you respond when a person insists you must observe __________ (fill one the blank) practice if you are sincere about your Christian walk?

Around a month ago I visited a small church fellowship with a mild interest in possibly joining. The leader there informed me that since they live in a cold climate geographically if I have any interest in joining their church group, I will agree to wear a regulation plain suit coat, and furthermore, I should be doing so anyway. He went on to pronounce if I continue to not wear said coat, he believes that in the future I will end up divorcing my wife and taking up arms. Point is, I believe whenever an individual freely allows others to dictate anything in order to measure up to another person’s standard of what they think Christianity is, they are on a slippery slope. I unapologetically adhere fundamentally to the Scriptures as my guide for life.

the following is something that has been percolating in my brain for awhile. it's becoming more settled, but not totally. so maybe if you folks stir it up, it'll help separate the dirt from the water after it all settles back down again.

we women are used to this. we have been told from the beginning of our life that our job is to love the men in our life and to dress modestly. we don't dress modestly for ourself, we dress modestly for the men.

so this sounds like the same thing. and it is either triggering, or it is reassuring. it depends on which side of the fence the woman happens to be on at that stage in her life.

that being said, is that why the men find it so hard to accept? because they are seeing the fallacy of the reasoning?

Here in Canada at least, you see it everywhere, "Be kind, wear a mask". But wearing or not wearing a mask does not make a person kind or unkind.

I don’t believe it’s loving to wear masks, because I don’t believe they’re effective. However, if someone very badly would like me to wear one, I will often lay my own desires down to do so, much as I might comply with someone who insisted I drink some beverage they offered me that I’d really rather not drink.

If I had a long term relationship with them, I would reason out our feelings on the matter and try to find a consensus.
Rather than wear a mask, I'll just walk away.

What a poor, unbiblical basis, although there are plenty of Mennonite groups where this is not the norm.

The first link does not go directly to the study. It is actually in CDC's EID Volume 26, Number 5 May 2020 under Policy review -- Nonpharmaceutical Measures for Pandemic Influenza in Nonhealthcare Settings -- Personal Protective and Environmental Measures

Maybe. But wearing a mask is an act of kindness. One kind act does not make a person kind or unkind, but it does, to some extent, express our character.

Unless it’s a defective Chinese KN95 mask, to pick just one example of a pointless, useless face mask that nonetheless we are being encouraged to buy and wear.

I've been working as a cashier through this whole PLANdemic. By far, the unkindest remarks come from mask wearers, they can be downright hateful when they see someone without a mask. (Before they were required for all to wear in OH). I've needed to remind peoe that some are exempt from wearing them due to health concerns. S customer told me another customer dropped the "F" bomb on her for not having a mask on. By & large, the impression I've gotten through all this is not kindness on either side, but various accusations. At this point here, it's not kindness but obeying our governor.

One customer asked me if we've had a mask problem- I said " do you mean by the group that calls peoe selfish for not wearing one, or the group that calls the mask wearers deceived & fearful?". I've heard it all, kindness had not stood out to me. Forgive me, but it's just been over 5 straight .months of observing attitudes that can be disheartening no matter where people stand on their belief about all this

What if my neighbor does not feel that I am loving them by wearing a mask, doesn't wear one themselves, and thinks that I should take mine off out of respect for our relationship?
