It took a while for TGS to pull Harold Herr's books.

I would note that places like Amazon still sell them. Perhaps the criticism that gets levelled at CAM, CLP, and others should also be directed at Amazon.
Most of the Bean books on Amazon are independent Christian bookstores using an Amazon storefront.

For example, here is a Howard Bean listing, but the seller is actually Hope Gospel Mission Bookstore in Wisconsin

Books by Howard Bean

Due to credible allegations about the personal life of Howard Bean, Christian Light is no longer selling any books he has written. Christian Light takes sexual abuse seriously and has not accepted any new materials from Howard since 2020. Christian Light is working toward replacing Sunday School material that Howard has written. – the Christian Light Board of Directors

The following titles are no longer available:

241500 A Good Minister

210501 Baptism: The Case for Pouring (tract)

265540 Climbing Upward

241446 Daily Strength for Growing Youth

241445 Daily Truth for Godly Youth

241940 Faithful in All Things (with Barbara Bean)

241517 Faithful Families

241515 Fruitful Families

241535 Keepsakes

241518 Learning Families

241516 Worshipful Families

Was this the right decision? Or an over reaction due to the me-too movement?

Again I don’t know first hand any of this, but I’d say any teaching for children/teenagers or new/old married should be pulled. The other stuff, read over by respected ministry and removed if it isn’t still worth keeping.
I’m not convinced that “the case for pouring” has any real relevance one way or another.

I am hearing rumours that his legal status has changed? Can't find 'official' corroboration?

Yes it is the right decision.

I would imagine that there are plenty of young authors and writers who are not tainted by sexual impropriety who will be happy to fill this space. It is not a zero-sum game. Sometimes you have to prune out the old wood to make room for the new.

The voice you give to Howard Bean and others of his nature is a voice you are depriving from someone else.
