Pretty interestng for 1967!

This series is the most comprehensive history of NEW FRANCE/CANADA and interactions with NEW ENGLAND/U.S. i’ve seen.
Inclusive of native Americans recognized as peoples with agency.

The series reminds of early differences in Catholics/Protestants in North Amerca.

i believe Part 9 ends at 1872? i haven’t gotten to Part 9 yet.

My husband’s grandmother (i knew IRL) was born in 1886. She was amazing.
My grandmothers were born in 1892 and 1899. Also amazing. My privilege to have known them.
They were so different in personalities, hardy+faithful, they all read their Bibles.

^^Description following Part 9:
Canada struggles to preserve her borders after the Treaty of Washington in this feature documentary.
The country's survival as a nation independent of the United States rests in the balance, as the film shows in its exploration of historical context, underlying factors, and possible alternatives.

Please note that this film was produced in 1969 and reflects the attitudes and thinking of its era.

To modern audiences, parts of the film may be perceived as offensive, but it must be seen as a cultural product of the era in which it was produced. The perspectives of Canadians (and the NFB) have evolved and become more conscious of Indigenous rights, realities and points of view since the making of the film. Most notably, through its rich collection of Indigenous-made films, available at Indigenous Cinema , the NFB continues to strive to challenge stereotypes and accurately depict the diverse experiences of Indigenous peoples.

Not all are enamored with PM Carney.

8:00 mark - China

Juno News / Carney ADMITS he was WRONG on Iran / 21+ min
2 days ago
“Prime Minister Mark Carney is admitting he was wrong to call for de-escalation after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran.

Speaking to reporters, Carney said that in hindsight his initial call to lower tensions was a mistake.

The prime minister’s comments come after several days of shifting positions from Ottawa.

Carney initially endorsed the strikes, later called for diplomacy, then suggested the attacks may violate international law before now walking back his call for de-escalation.

Carney also refused to rule out Canadian participation in the conflict, saying Canada will always stand by its allies when it “makes sense,” while noting Ottawa was not consulted before the U.S. and Israeli strikes were carried out.”

And now Canada passes a law making it a crime to quote the Bible.

I didn't know where to put this, and didn't know what to call it, if I was going to create a new thread, so looking at the list of current topics, I figured, OK, this happened in Canada, so here it is.

I realize that not everyone here can get on FaceBook, but this is good. (I know nothing at all about the ministry or the man who interviews these Hutterites, but while it's very long, and I'm not all the way through myself, I have already been blessed by listening to it.

A little less sensationalism and a little more nuance would be appropriate, I think. It's not law just yet; does not directly make it a crime to quote the Bible; and not the entire Bible, just the socially unpopular parts. Worth keeping an eye on for sure.
Christian campaign groups have expressed concern that proposed Canadian legislation might make it illegal to share certain religious views – and even Bible verses.

Bill C-09, known as the Combatting Hate Act, has received strong support from the Liberal Party and Bloc Québécois, and has passed its third reading.

The contentious issue is a proposed clause within the legislation. It would overturn an existing part of Canada's Criminal Code, which provides an exemption for hate speech if something was said in “good faith” as part of a religious discussion, or is “an opinion based on a religious text”.

The removal of this provision could lead to something being deemed hate speech, even if someone is expressing a religious view....

Bill C-09 must now pass in the Senate, which returns from its recess on 14th April.

It was after 10:00 at night before I finished watching the whole thing. The thing that really struck me was when one of the guys said that even after he knew that he believed, he was still not at peace with God, because he feared that his faith was not strong enough to save him. He read a passage from the OT (Isaiah, I think) that speaks of how even our RIGHTEOUSNESS is FILTHY RAGS. As he said it, "even my besties are filthy rags". Paul also says this in the NT, that Abraham believed God, and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. (I love that word 'reckoned' - sounds like I'm back down home.) Anyway, Abraham's faith was NOT ENOUGH to save him, not enough to be considered righteousness. BUT GOD credited it to him on the balance sheet of righteousness AS THOUGH IT WAS ENOUGH. (Sorry for shouting. GLORY!) It is all to easy for us to make even faith a 'work'. (Faith works, but it is not itself a work. Or, one might say that all of the power in faith is 'not of ourselves', but of God through the death and resurrection of JESUS.)

Isaiah 64:6 is one of the most profound, transformative passages in the Bible.
i think of it often, not often enough.
