I think I’ve heard that before. I’ve had a number of conversations about the high rate of cancer (anecdotally) among area ranchers and farmers. My wife’s father died of cancer when she was a teenager. Don’t know if it’s related to the water or hazardous agricultural materials.Judas Maccabeus wrote:If it is well water, it is likely the thorium in the rocks. I will say that 2001 is a beautiful, thought provoking film that I’ve fallen asleep to many, many times.

Remember, I am NMB. However Dr. Strangelove was a movie I remember so well because I had so many acquaintances that were almost John Burch types. Now, they are Trumpists.Szdfan wrote:I’m being facetious.Judas Maccabeus wrote:This surprises you. J.M.It’s just that Kubrick is so far, far away from anything I associate with conservative Anabaptism.

I think that Dr. Strangelove is uncomfortably prescient in numerous ways.

It certainly is - particularly showing how paranoid some people are of “the Russians”.

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
Death rate from this appears to be about 2%, that is way higher than the flu. No one has any immunity to this, so you likely will get it if exposed. Personally, it is no surprise it came from china. Below, some traditional medicine made from feces.Robert wrote:To put things into perspective:

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
i’m ok with quarantines, attempts to isolate, contain, prevent disease.
quarantines are temporary, and effective. logical.
i’m happy about the idea of attempting to “get ahead” of potential problems, rather than always running behind, late/never catching up.
in this case, quarantines may have additional benefit of lessening spread of cases of established flu, and other communicable disease ? ?
i presume the hype is because this virus is damaging and deadly, also, reports are it can recur, when it does, recurrence symptoms are worse. mutations are another potential.
i’m ok with going through the motions of prevention and response. something worse could happen.
it’s not a bad idea for responsible leaders and ordinary citizens to have an idea of what to expect. like fire drills.
big natural disasters happen. disease is one form.
i wonder how pilots+crews think about their roles, and their exposure, in situations like this.
what if they choose to stay home for awhile? there are lots of things to consider in “what if?” situations. many are dependent on the “daily system” to function properly for survival.
the reports i see continue to range from, “it’s nothing” to “take all precautions, it’s inevitable.”
i believe i got the swine flu late in its progression. it was July!
it was MISERABLE. i had visitors. i refused to let them in the house. we talked through glass.
they brought medicine, left it on the porch. they didn’t get sick.
i didn’t go to the doctor. i didn’t want to infect anyone else.
the nurse thanked me.

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
Flu has a 17.5% death rate in the US if those numbers are correct. Sounds a little high.Judas Maccabeus wrote: Death rate from this appears to be about 2%, that is way higher than the flu.

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
This is from the CDC website.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/pr ... imates.htm

This would give the flu a .14% death rate.
