The reason I brought it up in this thread was because I know it could be an issue that was already brought up about the fact that Catholic is starting it someone using an orthodox Bible study, and on a Mennonite forum- so I was trying to bring the clarification of what the real issue is so that it's not so much of a problem to together study Scripture, denomination affiliation set aside. This being said, i suppose that could be a thread.joey_the_ox wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 6:40 amMaybe start another thread if you want to discuss this?Valerie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 6:36 amCan we agree that the Bible was interpreted before the Reformation?
That being said once the Reformation happened interpretations went all over the place and who could say which one is the right one?
My understanding that the anabaptist and other Protestant denominations may not take issue with the interpretations of the ancient church. It is more that they struggle with what is taught outside of holy Scripture that they consider tradition of the church.
Would that be a correct understanding?

While I have my own misgivings about this Bible study, the specific translation used isn't one of them. Although if you want to go back to prior to the reformation the Latin Vulgate would make the most sense... only a few people on here can read Latin of course.Valerie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 6:58 am

Well I don't have a problem studying with anyone from any denominational affiliation. I suppose it comes down to what you expect going in. If you expect everyone to agree, then that will probably lead to a bad experience. If you instead expect that you might be able to learn something even from those with whom you disagree, then I think the experience will be better for all. The latter is my point of view. I'm not going to insist that all agree on a certain interpretation.Valerie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 6:58 amThe reason I brought it up in this thread was because I know it could be an issue that was already brought up about the fact that Catholic is starting it someone using an orthodox Bible study, and on a Mennonite forum- so I was trying to bring the clarification of what the real issue is so that it's not so much of a problem to together study Scripture, denomination affiliation set aside. I think we're making this way more complicated than it has to be.joey_the_ox wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 7:10 am

Translation vs interpretation or is interpretation that leads to translation.Soloist wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 7:06 amWhile I have my own misgivings about this Bible study, the specific translation used isn't one of them. Okay, wonder then what are your misgivings? The OP was started to see if there's interest.
I've been on this forum a LONG time, so its not difficult to anticipate potential issues but could we "pass the test" of striving for peace considering different backgrounds? Then it could be beneficial, and God pleased?

One of the most valuable aspects of this forum (for me) is (so frequently) reading discussions (on anything) - most often through an Anabaptist/CM perspective. Including Current Events, and Politics. Including various denoms, even non-Christian and atheist views.
Including the MANY Bible translations, languages. (i think) most members continue to arrive here looking for CM perspective, no matter where they’ve been or where they are.
It will be interesting to see if jot’s study receives as much response as his proposal.
i’m enjoying the journey.

I have a confession to make: I will be terribly amused if this devolves into the finer points of distinctions between Eastern and Western apostolic doctrine.
