We discussed Gabby Gifford's assassination attempt and how it was a wake up call for me at the time. Does anyone believe speaker Johnson's statement that "this is not who we are as a country"? I don't.
They are not getting fired because they disagree with Mr. Kirk.
People are getting fired because they are celebrating his death by assassination.
I am shocked to see the videos of celebrations! I think this is the most disturbing thing I’ve seen yet.
It’s gruesome, i turn away. i’m glad no one has brought it here, there are quantities.
After seeing camera recordings of the recent Tesla felony vandalism, by perfectly ordinary-looking high-functioning “well-educated” people, i’m dismayed but not surprised at this. It hurts the soul to witness.

One of the strangest things to witness in the present era is the radical protesters, etc being mostly old, white people, the same age as my parents. We had a local “no kings” rally that looked very similar to the line for Old Country Buffet.

In contrast Charlie Kirk had a positive message that seemed to reach millions of young people. Youth represent the future. We look to them for hope. But the elderly used to represent stability, a rock to lean on. It is very shocking to see so many of them abandon that role.

Well said. It’s so disturbing. Others are noticing, too.
decades ago, i saw my young peers being so self-centered, self-absorbed, young+beautiful. i never dreamed i’d see “this”.
i was puzzled+confused when young. now repulsed. astonished. sad.

encouraged by young people, tho! throngs of young people. i had no idea until this week. they didn’t tell me! :P

hopeful my grdaughter will not feel pressure to hide or deny her faith. (which was how she was met BY TEACHERS moving from Catholic school to public school, 3rd grade!) it hurt her tender heart. it hurt her every year.

until last year, when she returned to C. high school. her wish. her wish all along.
not that C. school is perfect! at least she doesn’t have to hide or deny her tender faith.

i credit the Holy Spirit.

On the one hand, that seems more of a liberal city thing to do, which won’t work in CK’s favor. But it will be interesting if the right comes up with something similar to the street naming to memorialize him.

I see similarities between the two in terms of activism and assassination. Time will tell if CK’s death accelerates his message or not.
Wife: Believe me, they are already trying that. I really think though that it seems pretty divisive to change existing road names for someone who has nothing to do with whatever city is doing it.

Not to dishonor the forum’s sign men,
locally, street, road, highway signs memoralizing .. loads of people, are off the charts. In town, around the big state university, ugh.
A cluttered mess. The university L O V E S big donors. There are many. People love the rah rah.

Years ago, viewing a “local” (aka, Chicago CBS satellite) news site, i questioned this in “comments”. Pointing out, there are ways to memorialize, for instance, there’s an existing tasteful local monument to para-Olympics, designed to add names. (The university was known for vocational rehab, since moved to Chicago.) Memorials designed to grow make sense to me.

Not appreciated.

i eventually stopped viewing that site. i looked at it recently, Comments closed.

Wife: yeah, I sort of think that it would be better if cities were to do it, for it to be a road that isn't named yet.
There are some pretty random names out there, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Otherwise, it seems like they should check with all the residents of the roads they are proposing to rename, since they would be the ones affected by it. It is sad that he died by violence, but some of these memorials seem more for political purposes than really being about him.

Part of what might make this look "strange" is the perception that the No Kings rally is "radical protestors". It was the same around me. A bunch of old conservatives holding signs bringing attention to creeping authoritarianism in the country they love and grew up in. It was pretty mild. If THAT is what is being perceived as a "radical" protest, this country is too far gone I'm afraid. That perception means, categorically, anyone who sees a problem with the Powers and Principalities of the country is a "radical".

The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly.

Since the killing, my wife has been seeing lots of Charlie's videos come across her social media and has been watching them and showing some of them to me. One that I watched was a discussion on IVF with a set of IVF twins that asked him about his position on the topic. My wife said that he talked with better moral clarity on the subject than a lot of Mennonites do, and after watching it, I could agree. I assume that I would agree with his position on many other social/moral issues.

I don't think that Anabaptists should take up his exact methods for taking our views to broader society, and obviously I don't think we should embrace conservative politics. But we should acknowledge that a lot of people at least engaged the topic of biblical morality because of his work. I think the work that Ernie is doing with college students is a better model of doing this same sort of thing.

This is how i’m seeing it.
Eastern Orthodox, for example, is not going to morph into whatever CK is, yet there’s respect for intent and common ground.
CK isn’t saying “my way or the highway”. That’s important. Evidently, he opened doors that have been tightly closed for decades.

Of course partisans will loudly claim whatever they choose. No stopping that. In God’s time, Truth prevails.

In my area, esp the big university area, but not only there, they don’t initially name or rename streets, they fit additional memorial signs ON TOP of existing signs, giving many streets 2 names and 2 signs! “Clutter” i kid you not.

They’re nice looking signs. But. sigh.

Unfortunately, the signs often do NOT stay straight, so this erodes intended “decorum” shall we say?
If the names are popular they’re stolen to decorate dorm rooms.
They’re subject to decay, weather, damage, they require maintenance and replacement.

i’d rather they wouldn’t. Doesn’t the city council have more important things? i’ve never seen a price tag.

Decades ago, probably a nice idea. Now, excessive. Typical human constructs. Largely ego-centric. Certainly political aspects.
