Re: jm's random thots
I'm not sure that we need bans on topics if we can simply discuss them with maturity and self control.
I agree with Soloist that we discuss politics pretty much the same way people do on redditt. That doesn't seem right on a Mennonite forum. A discussion shouldn't feel like a fight.

Re: jm's random thots
Yeah, that's a little insulting, and I really think part of the core problem is that some people on MN are so convinced that they have deep insight into other people and can tell you what's wrong with them. So I don't think that was helpful.
But I think there's a real problem here. I think MN is dominated by fights that nobody considers helpful, not even the people who are in those fights, and that's drowning out useful conversation. I think trying out different things is a good idea. I am happy to participate in experiments to see what can help.

Re: jm's random thots
As a person who isn't really interested in politics much at all, it feels to me that that's pretty much all there is here anymore. Even topics in other categories drift into politics. Even when the opening post specifically asks for no politics.
I also participate in several (5, to be exact) auto forums. All of these have strict rules about political or religious comments. If a thread drifts too far in that direction, it is locked by the Admin. If a forum member persists in going off the rails (after a few reprimands), they will be banned. They do this to preserve the generally friendly exchange on the forum. (There is another hotrod forum - The H.A.M.B. - where the members strongly tend toward being insulting, argumentative, and sometimes down right nasty. THAT is tolerated there, but if you say the word "ratrod" in any sort of favorable way you will be banned, or at least severely lamblasted. I never joined there, but have done a lot of lurking/reading, because some of them are very knowledgeable in this area. I haven't been there now recently, not for many months. I mostly go there when someone on one of the other sites links to a certain 'build thread' over there.)
I don't know how many members here are involved in old cars, hotrods, ratrods, or even visit a forum that specializes in the vehicles they own, their 'family car' or 'daily driver'. Maybe some come here because there aren't a lot of political forums available. It's the only forum I'm on that allows it at all. But it's embarrassing to me that the kindest discussions I read are actually between guys that for the most part are not practicing Christians, although there are some on these other sites who ARE Christians. (This comes out most often when a member him or herself or a family member is sick or dying, or otherwise in need of prayer - then those comments are freely allowed, and you see promises to pray that go beyond the "sending positive vibes" sort of deal.)

Re: jm's random thots
i was surprised at the interest and variety of interest in automotives on MD, MN has some, not a lot.Neto wrote: ↑Mon Apr 24, 2023 12:21 pm As a person who isn't really interested in politics much at all, it feels to me that that's pretty much all there is here anymore. i believe there are LOTS of people in the world who want nothing to do with politics. most people (who make the world go round) are not ever found in headlines/news reports. not even in back pages.

Re: jm's random thots
Sounds like Boot and I are willing to participate. (I will waive my $70, if she doesn't want to do that, she may designate it to be given to a charity/church of her choosing, or if she doesn't want to do that, my choosing.)
Ken, are you willing to participate?

and, regarding cash:i wrote above:

“In the event,” my request would be for Robert’s forum operating costs.

I would perfectly fine with such an allocation of funds as well. temporal1, does this mean you're ready to participate? That makes 3 out of 4 of us.
