I often couldn’t tell the difference just by looking between a Palestinian and an Israeli.
It's not even about that.

According to the article they were DELIBERATELY shot which means that some soldier put them in his sights or scope and then pulled the trigger. This wasn't some collateral damage from indiscriminate bombing. Some Israeli soldier took aim and fired.

Which suggests to me that the Israeli rules of engagement in this war in a populated urban area are egregiously flawed. Unless these hostages were wearing military garb and carrying weapons this means that Israel is freely taking aim at and murdering civilians. And yes, it is, in fact, murder and a war crime if you deliberately shoot civilians, even in the middle of a war.

From the reporting it seems to suggest that they only mistake they think they have made was accidentally killing an Israeli hostage. If it was ordinary Gazan civilians there would have been no "mistake" and no news story since that is apparently what they are doing here.

I'm not a defender of either side in this war and this is an example of why.

Are you saying that if Hamas doesn't wear uniforms then it's considered a war crime for the Israeli army to shoot at them?

There might be more to it. Almost impossible right now to know why they did it.
Was Israel enforcing a curfew? Had other hostages been used as suicide bombers? Did they think the bindings on their hands were weapons?
In a war zone there is less time to think and more shooting. These were not police.
US has done it many times too.

For example it was very common to surrender and then attack among the insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is a war crime to shoot unarmed civilians in any war.

If Israel is unable to distinguish between civilians and soldiers then they should revisit their rules of engagement and make sure that they can do so. That is Israel's responsibility and obligation. At a minimum it means being more careful of what you shoot at.

And yes, the US has been involved in many egregious examples of similar crimes over the years in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and so forth.

Any time you have irregulars/militia/insurgents… fighting becomes hard to determine who is and who is not.

Yes, sometimes life is unfair. Especially when you invade someone else's home.

War is never fair to civilians. Ever.

Right. It is really something, to see humanity make attempts at civilizing warfare. To reconcile the unreconcilable.
Personally, I believe the day is coming that the Geneva Convention and all “rules of war” will be completely dispensed with.
The only reason they are still around is the lack of all out total war since their inauguration.

How many hostages have been rescued so far?
