So even though you have no idea how you ought to become engaged in such a case, you are willing to say that a person who believes they can do a more effective work for God by working with their neighbors instead is "not serious"?Ken wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 9:02 pmI would say that one really isn't engaged in peacemaking as Jesus was speaking about if one ignores and avoids engaging with any and every warmaking endeavor that one's government engages in. While at the same time profiting from living in that same society. I don't particularly feel obligated to engage myself directly in the conflict between say Ethiopia and Tigray. Or between Myanmar and the Rohingyas. Although I would support peacemaking efforts to resolve those conflicts and any other conflicts around the world. But if it is my own government using my own tax dollars and deploying my neighbor's children to fight a war across the globe then I will feel a greater responsibility to become engaged in some way. Although what that might entail I really couldn't say.ken_sylvania wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 8:41 pmI wasn't talking about joining the government. I am using the term "engagement" broadly.
If our government decides to march off to war in Ukraine with 500,000 troops. Would you remain apathetic and disengaged and say "those are the affairs of the kingdom of man and of no concern to us as Christians?" Would you speak out in any way? Would you protest? Would you support any peacemaking efforts by your church? Relief efforts? Efforts to support refugees? Would you encourage and support conscientious objectors? Those are all forms of engagement and the sort of thing I am talking about. What I am saying is that you can't honestly claim to be a peacemaker and then ignore what your own government is doing if it is doing the opposite. But how you choose to engage is up to you. It doesn't necessarily mean joining the State Department as a diplomat so you can engage in government policy directly. In fact it almost never means that.
There might well be some conservative groups like some Amish perhaps, who might say "those are the affairs of the English and of no concern to us" as long as their own boys aren't getting drafted. I would disagree with that position. I would respect their right to hold it. But I don't think one can claim to be a peacemaker and then disengage from every conflict that doesn't confront you directly.
If your government decided to march off to war in Ukraine I would not speak out in any way intended to change your government's position or actions in the matter. I would not protest. My church would not send a peacemaking team (it's more important to reconcile individuals to God rather than try to reconcile nations). Relief efforts, if engaged in, would be outside of government channels.
Why must I feel an obligation to respond to whatever your government is doing? I don't feel a special obligation to respond to everything that the slumlord two towns away is doing - why would I have an obligation to respond to everything your government is doing?
How can you say that you would respect the right of the Amish to hold the position you describe while at the same time saying that it is the position of liars and cheats? Or are you saying that the Amish would not claim to be peacemakers?
How did Jesus go about trying to to engage in peacemaking between the Romans and the people over whom they ruled? He doesn't seem to have given us an example on how we ought to go about negotiating peace between nations, but he did give us an example on how to live in peace among ourselves. What kind of peacemaking did Jesus speak about? Was He really talking about mediators, or was he talking about people who live peaceably with others? I incline to the latter interpretation.
Nice way to sidestep the question. Do the Amish in your "hypothetical example" not claim to be peacemakers, or are you respecting their right to hold a position that you describe as the position of liars and cheats?
