Casino Planned For Edge Of Lancaster Amish Country

Kurtz along with many community members in the religiously conservative area are opposed to the development. Red and white signs line many yards, and read, “Don’t gamble with our future,” residents’ polite way of saying “no” to a casino in their neighborhood.

This is in the area my in-laws live. They say if it gets built, they're moving out of that area.

I don't blame them. Everywhere these things pop up, other perversions follow as well: sex trades, drugs, and the like.

The township claims it will increase the tax base. Something is seriously amiss with government funding.

If a few businesses move out of the area, the cost will be far more than $1.2 million in losses to the township.

(By the way, this is one of those areas where I strongly disagree with Trump, who just loved building casinos.)

Chicago Dems have 3 BIG “solutions” for all of Illinois:
1) Abortion haven, silence prolife discussion;
2) Gambling everywhere;
3) Drug legalized and normalized.

Not limited to those 3 regrettable goals ^^ but, those are at or near the top.
More Tax Revenue solves problems! :( Sure. it always has. Right? :(

Illinois used to be a fine state for finding honest, respectable work, to raise families, solid public school education, thriving churches. None of these prior attractions to Illinois are discussed in Chicago.

(i believe) Chicago politicians have NO motivation to see downstate Illinois thrive.
They see the county voting records, and know, downstate voters do NOT vote blue.

i suppose this is happening in every state with a dominant city that votes blue. :-|

I have relatives relatively nearby as well. In fact my aunt's most recent late husband lived on and farmed the property in question years ago when his first wife was living.

That land and adjacent properties have a history of development proposals that were poorly executed and eventually failed, or so grandiose they never got off the ground (in one of them, only a landfill was ever built). Unfortunately, Penn National just might have deep enough pockets to get this one started and keep it operating long enough to be a detriment to the community.

You guys are way behind the times. Lancaster County has had casinos for years. In fact they are Mennonite run. They are called "produce auctions".

I'm not sure what you're trying to convey here appleman- what is the problem with "produce auctions" to the point they're compared to casino's?

Our county has the produce auctions- the Swartzentruber Amish are the farmers/growers plus Mennonites have things they contribute to be auctioned-

I'm trying to understand why you said this? Obviously at least 5 people agree with you-

It was to be a joke Valerie.. :) Our local produce auction here which I frequent three times a week during the summer months is often referred to as the Mennonite casino.

This is due to the fact that if you take things there you never know for sure what you will get for it. Sometimes you get far above market price and sometimes way below. The same applies to buyers. And more often than not it appears to be quite arbitrary or simply lucky or unlucky, hence the casino reference.

Hope that explains what was meant.

Oh whew, what a relief- I thought I was doing/attending/supporting something frowned upon again!

You know since you explained more- I really wish I knew how much this benefits the Amish that grow the produce/flowers etc-
I love to attend & watch the whole production- it's amazing!

BUT sometimes I feel like the buyer gets perhaps way too good a deal at the Amish expense- I am interested to know- it's hard to tell with Swartzentrubers because they 'appear' to be the poorest of the poor- and they intend to keep that appearance just that way- so I always wonder how they are REALLY doing-

Thanks for explaining appleman!
