Thanks, Lester. It seemed as though I hit a sore spot though.lesterb wrote:Our uncles and families were RLDS so that means Terry hasn't changed his allegiance at all. They just changed their name.Hats Off wrote:At a recent family reunion, I said to one of the cousins "I can recognize you as believers but I really don't know if you go to church and where. One of my uncles married a Latter Day Saint girl and influenced another brother and his wife to also join the Latter Day Saints. I knew that the oldest male cousin was attending a mainline protestant church and wondered if more had gone that way. One of the Latter Day Saints cousin's children is a Methodist pastor.
It seemed the man I asked the question was almost offended and answered that they attend a Community of Christ congregation. He indicated that it had some LDS background but today they are NOT LDS influenced. It seems they do want to distance themselves from the LDS or Mormon faith, whatever that is.
I suppose they still own the copyright on the Book of Mormon. What are they going to call it?

Re: Mormons Don't Want You Calling Them Mormons Anymore
Would this be any different if it were Mennonites not wanting to be called by that name anymore? Afterall it was a "nickname" given by their detractors originally. Is it any different than those Mennonites that I have had tell me that they would prefer to just be known as Christians?

The difference is that they are not "just Christians". Mormons are something else, and attempting to pretend they are something like evangelical Christians is deceptive.gcdonner wrote:Would this be any different if it were Mennonites not wanting to be called by that name anymore? Re: Mormons Don't Want You Calling Them Mormons Anymore
They have a new Style Guide, which says, among other things:
This name is so baked into what they do, it's gonna be hard to change ...
This was officially announced by the Mormon Newsroom. Which ... might need to be renamed now ...While the term "Mormon Church" has long been publicly applied to the Church as a nickname, it is not an authorized title, and the Church discourages its use. Thus, please avoid using the abbreviation "LDS" or the nickname "Mormon" as substitutes for the name of the Church, as in "Mormon Church," "LDS Church," or "Church of the Latter-day Saints."

Re: Mormons Don't Want You Calling Them Mormons Anymore
Nice revisionist history they have thereWhen referring to people or organizations that practice polygamy, it should be stated that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not affiliated with polygamous groups.
This part is concerning, because it seems they are attempting to police other's speech and establish that "Mormon" is an offensive term, much as other words are no longer politically correct in this day and age. One could conceivably see themselves fired / dragged out on social media / attempts to find old tape recordings of one saying the "m word".When referring to Church members, the terms "members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" or "Latter-day Saints" are preferred. We ask that the term "Mormons" not be used.

I wonder if there is an association in their minds of the closeness to Muslim, with Mormon???Josh wrote:Nice revisionist history they have thereWhen referring to people or organizations that practice polygamy, it should be stated that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not affiliated with polygamous groups.

I don’t think so. The (ahem) LDS has invested a lot a lot of effort and money into creating a positive image for the term “Mormon”. See, for example, the I’m a Mormon campaign the church has run for almost a decade (and note that it’s hosted on the church’s primary domain, lds.org). Or visit the church’s introductory site for curious seekers, mormon.org.gcdonner wrote:I wonder if there is an association in their minds of the closeness to Muslim, with Mormon???

Re: Mormons Don't Want You Calling Them Mormons Anymore
This is puzzling in different ways.
They’ve not noticed, the Catholic Church has used capitalized “Church” (with, and without capitalized “Catholic/catholic”) widely recognized, for a very long time?

Re: Mormons Don't Want You Calling Them Mormons Anymore
Christians have been using the term "church" (and other similar terms, like gemeinde, gathering, fellowship, kirche, kirk, and so on) for centuries.
