i’m kinda shocked by this - murals of IZ to be displayed in many places.
If this were me or my loved one, i wouldn’t want it, at all.

i hope the artists come up with wonderful ideas for it, i think that’s possible.

For instance, my first thought would be if her image might be at center of MANY MANY victims of these awful AMBUSH type crimes, there have been so many over the years. Including first responders, AMBUSHED+EXECUTED. The advantage of art is the possbilities for expression of profound messages is great. This could be useful.

There is so much violence that is only represented in statistics. Very cold for loved ones.
Adding insult to injury, so many tampering with stats to HIDE facts for PC goals!

TO REPEAT,
i believe IZ stands out because there is, 1) sufficient camera footage, before, during, after, that captures the UNPROVOKED attack,
AND, 2) the murderer’s voice stating he killed her because of her skin color. No remorse.

Of course he will enjoy every legal recourse possible, “innocent until proven guilty”. As he should.

Elon Musk pledges $1M to murals honoring Ukrainian refugee murdered in North Carolina
President Donald Trump said the video of the murder was 'horrific'

Silicon Valley is stepping in after the killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska shocked the nation.

Eoghan McCabe, CEO and founder of Intercom, committed $500,000 to commission murals of Zarutska’s face in major U.S. cities.
"I am offering $500k in $10k grants to paint murals of the face of Iryna Zarutska in prominent US city locations," McCabe wrote.

Those who want to participate in or donate to the initiative are encouraged to contact McCabe’s chief of staff, Katie Brenske Tolstedt.

McCabe’s post caught the attention of billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who replied with an offer to contribute $1 million. Musk has also been vocal about Zarutska’s case, particularly media coverage of the killing and public reaction. .. ..

It is tragic. Only that the tragic aspect is almost drowned out by the political dissonance and incoherence.
Seems the right likes this sort of refuge, but not others too much. While the left is silent. Both sides are so pathetically hypocritical and unprincipled.

Ken:
What we should have learned from the Covington HS video scandal is that what we see on a viral video isn't necessarily what people experiencing an event saw or perceived. Here is one analysis of the video suggesting that bystanders likely didn't immediately see what was happening or understand that she was in distress: https://thehill.com/homenews/5496059-ir ... n-killing/ …

The Covington HS incident was discussed at length on this forum.
Msm was found to be in the wrong, i believe settling out of court.

Much has changed since.
Pouncing on edited bits to jump to conclusions and judge is wrong. That hasn’t changed.

This case differs because msm seemed to want to bury/ignore the IZ report, until “lesser” sources aired the light rail surveillance footage and tapes of the killer saying he’d killed a woman because of her skin color.

The footage shows IZ boarding, sitting, keeping completely to herself, her murderer sitting behind her, nonchalantly preparing his knife, then attacking her from behind, then walking away along the cars, leaving a bloody trail behind him, talking openly about what he’d done. The videos are easily found online.

The situation with onlookers are not as clear.
IZ was attacked, it doesn’t appear she screamed, fought or even realized she’d been fatally stabbed.
She must have gone immediately into shock. She seemed to slump quietly in her seat, onto the floor, soon blood pooled around her. Eventually someone tried to assist, it was too late, that person didn’t appear to have medical training.

The videos are online. i can’t bear to post them.

This is not a Covington moment.

To repeat,
the alleged murderer will enjoy due process, as he must, as he should.

The horror being, he played jury, judge, executioner to IZ, she has no due process.
By his own words, he found her guilty of being white and executed her for it. i believe that’s a hate crime.

msm SEEMS to be in process of backing away from their egregious lib bias, due to complaints, lost lawsuits, lost consumers.
imho, they’re taking their sweet time with it.
there’s reason to hope.

The person in question had been arrested 14 times.

There was no safety in numbers for Iryna. None of them bothered to help her at all as she bled to death.

The video was not a “viral video”. It’s simply the surveillance footage from the transit authority - you know, the measures that public transit advocates claim help prevent crime.

The woman was attacked, stabbed, and left to bleed out and die. There was no safety in numbers. The other people simply ignored her.

When on public transit, I have witnessed altercations, fights, and attacks multiple times. I have simply avoided becoming involved and get off at the next station. I didn’t want to get stabbed too. There is no “safety in numbers” when bystanders who do get involved are treated like Daniel Penny was.
In any event, we have chosen to build a society in which we massively underfund and neglect mental health crises such that the criminal justice system has little choice but to recycle people through the system. The barriers to involuntary commitment are enormous and in many if not most communities there is no space to put them anyway. Short of building concentration camps for the mentally ill to lock them up permanently, what do you propose?
I propose that either:

Choice #1: the type of people who have been arrested 14 times, released, and then stab girls on a subway are not allowed on public transportation.

Choice #2: instead of public transportation, use private cars where I won’t be forced to share my car with a deranged criminal.

There is already billions of funding diverted to cities for all manner of programs which, apparently, don’t work. More money is not the answer.
That said, the points that I made still stand. You are more likely to be the victim of a crime when you drive your car than when you take public transportation. And you are far more likely to die in your car than on public transportation. We have just normalized car violence and so don't notice the daily carnage right in front of us. And so car violence never makes the news.
No, that’s not the case. I’ve never been hollered at or cornered in a private car because of my race. I haven’t had someone demand I give him my money (although admittedly shortly after I warned said person to leave right now), we drove off in a 1980s Chevy C/K body since we were changing from public transportation to a vehicle. I would note the assailant stayed waiting for us on the street, but fled once we saw us drive off in the truck. (I told the assailant to leave because one of my companions was armed and willing to use deadly force if necessary. I’m glad he didn’t decide to escalate further.)
Public transit is also a necessity for millions of Americans. I have a co-worker who is blind. Without public transportation he would lose his independence and ability to work. He can't just choose to drive to work. He has to take the bus. There are millions of Americans for whom this is true. So we should be looking for ways to make it better and safer. Just like we should be looking for ways to make our streets and highways safer for all users as well.
To make it better and safer, when someone is arrested 14 times, they need to be kept incarcerated and sent to a work camp or something where they can work to pay the cost of their incarceration. I propose either some kind of farms/fields or factory work.

#1 will most certainly happen. This individual is likely never going to be on the street again. At the time of the killing he was not a killer. According to news coverage his criminal record was as follows:
Brown has 14 previous court cases in Mecklenburg County. He was sentenced to six years in North Carolina prison after convictions for robbery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, and larceny in Mecklenburg County in 2015. The convictions were for two separate incidents in 2013 and 2014, according to jail records.

Brown was released in September 2020. He was arrested again in September 2022 for assault on a female in Mecklenburg County, but no court records are available for the case. Brown was arrested again in January 2025 for misuse of the 911 system after he allegedly called 911 on CMPD officers for not taking his medical issue seriously. He was arrested and was in court in July for this case to have a forensic evaluator appointed to examine his condition.
How many additional years should he have been locked up for mis-using the 911 system? There is clearly a failure of the mental health system here. But I'm not sure if there was a failure of the criminal justice system. At least that isn't clear from the reporting I have read.
JohnH wrote: ↑Fri Sep 12, 2025 7:32 amChoice #2: instead of public transportation, use private cars where I won’t be forced to share my car with a deranged criminal.
#2 solves nothing because on a per-mile basis you are more likely to die as a result of crime using a private car than using public transportation. Whether you believe that or not, it is, in fact true. Those are national statistics. But on a per-city basis it is probably also true. There are vastly more deaths on our highways than on public transportation and a large percentage are caused by criminal activity. And cars are a far deadlier weapon than knives. We have just normalized it so don't notice.

Don't get me wrong. I think we should invest in making all of our modes of transportation safer. But the notion that you can avoid risk by avoiding public transportation is simply wrong. Perception versus reality.

Can you point out examples of people bring stabbed to death due to driving private cars?

If you want people to use public transportation, the #1 priority is to make people feel like they won’t get stabbed. That starts with violent criminals not being allowed on it. If someone commits armed robbery, as far as I’m concerned, they’ve forfeited their right to be in public spaces.

Scroll up. I gave two examples from the past month of people here in my community being murdered by criminals in cars. There have been at least a dozen such examples in the past year in my community alone. Who needs knives when you are sitting in a vastly more deadly killing machine?

I agree 100% that we should invest in making our public transportation safer and better. We should be investing in making our streets and highways safer as well.

I'm also all in favor of improving our mental health system in this country and ensuring that dangerous mentally ill people: (1) aren't on public transportation, (2) aren't on our public highways, and (3) don't have access to weapons as was the case with the mentally ill person who just shot Charlie Kirk.

Can we agree on that?

particularly when the weak and innocent like women and children are in danger

In my own life my solution was “drive a car and rent a parking spot”. It got stressful facing one of these situations every few weeks. For an example, some of these crazy people think you looked at them and then will come over and scream at you and start threatening you, like they are trying to start a fight

Complaining about Penny seems like looking at the wrong problem.
Deranged people on drugs should not be in public transportation.
I faced this last year on public transit...a homeless man made threatening statements to my two year old...we moved to the other side of the car. He lunged at us and I fled down the platform at the next stop. Won't be taking public transit anytime soon.
That's very scary and an unusual experience... Lot's of people ride public transit and don't experience things at that level. I've ridden public transit many times (even though not living in city) and have never seen anything like this. I love riding subways/rapid transit/etc. Millions of people use public transit daily and don't see this kind of thing very often, if ever. (Sure, strange / weird things, but not attacking people)
