Seeing these various government agencies in action, really is a breath of fresh air. Seeing their professionalism and ability and humility and skill etc, etc, etc. first hand, listening to them, in juxtaposition against the chorus of negativity, corruption, lies, preening, etc. that we see and hear constantly in the media in the national or state politics, is really a staggering difference. These people are government that is necessary.
I suppose it is in part a product of humans coming together against a clear and real foe, in this case a fire, with a clear understanding of what achievement and success is.

This afternoon a column of smoke rose high into the blue summer sky, west of us. I assumed it was a farmer doing a controlled field burn. When I noticed it, it was probably around 100 acres. It quickly grew to 400, then 600. It is straight west of us about 10 miles. I can watch the smoke column from my recliner.
Dry desert area there, and there are a bunch of homes out there. This could be bad if they don’t get it under control soon.
Weather forecast is blazing hot, highs in the 90’s for the next 6 days with no rain, humidity in the low 20’s.

No, we won’t be in danger. We live in an agricultural area, which here means every field around us has irrigation such as wheel lines and pivots. Many fields are being irrigated right now, and are wet and green.JohnL wrote: ↑Fri Aug 22, 2025 3:09 amPraying for y’all. Last weekend I drove my daughter out to college in eastern WA (WSU-Pullman) and we saw various fires and columns of smoke along the way out further east around Hermiston and the Tri Cities and beyond. It is dry and blazing hot out there. But I haven't read about any new big fires. At least yet.JohnL wrote: ↑Fri Aug 22, 2025 3:09 amPraying for y’all. Currently the Flat Fire is at 3,300 acres. Fortunately is moving south, away from most of the homes.

A towering 325-foot Doerner Fir, near Coquille, Oregon, caught fire earlier this week and continues to burn. Infrared footage reveals flames inside a cavity about 280 feet up.
Estimated to be 450 to 500 years old, this ancient giant is one of the world’s largest coastal Douglas-firs.

22,000 acres now. We are under a heat advisory. Yesterday 97 degrees and 16% humidity. Wind has been pretty still so that helps.
A lot of people evacuating the area of the fire. Streams of vehicles, bumper to bumper on the highway yesterday. Quite smoky, the sun was just a red ball through the smoke. Could look right at it while it set behind the mountains. A lot of effort is going towards protecting homes.
