California should go on permanent dst. Would be identical Timezone to Arizona / Alberta then
Chicago / TX also should, and then be the same tz as the East Coast.
We could get by with two time zones nationwide and no more dst

Re: DST - Yes or No
Here in the far north of Vancouver WA* I prefer things they way they are.
During spring/summer/fall DST works fine and gives us long daylight hours in the middle of summer.
During winter when daylight is short it makes sense to use ST otherwise it gets light so late in the morning that kids are walking to school in the dark in the middle of the commuter rush.
I find the twice a year changing of clocks on a fall and spring Sunday to be utterly trivial. Especially these days with cell phones that change time automatically.
* BTW, Vancouver WA (Portland metro) is the same latitude as Montreal.

Re: DST - Yes or No
One obvious thing would be to just let each state make its own decision about what time zone to be in, instead of Congress deciding. Currently states have freedom to choose DST, or no DST - but they cannot choose to be on "permanent" DST. They should be allowed to.
Then, maybe California would decide to go on permanent PST, and be in the same timezone as Arizona.. folks up in Washington State might decide they want to keep things the way they are.

Right now, states can't decide to change timezones, which effectively means they cannot decide to go on permanent DST.Ken wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 8:47 pmSo basically the way things are now with each state deciding?JohnH wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 6:33 pm One obvious thing would be to just let each state make its own decision about what time zone to be in, instead of Congress deciding. They can either choose to observe DST, or they can choose not to go on DST, like Arizona.
