"It's not happening"
Ken wrote: Mon Sep 16, 2024 5:58 pm As for being "invited" to Springfield by employers? There is no reporting to that effect. Employers are not sending out invitations to Haitians or any other immigrants elsewhere in the country. Haitian immigrants are simply showing up because there is word of mouth that good jobs are available in a town with a low cost of living.
"It's happening, but what's the big deal?"

What is described here is nothing more than the perfectly legal activities of an employment agency recruiting legal workers and assisting them with relocation. This sort of thing happens all the time across the US. ....

There wasn't any reporting to that effect in the articles originally being discussed. It was just employers saying they were happy to employ Haitians because they were better workers. And that they were making their way north for jobs on their own. Not that they were paying to recruit them from out of state.

Go read them. These are what Ernie posted

Yet MORE deliberate lying for political purposes.

Sigh....https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/09/18 ... =url-share
Asked about Haitians immigrants legally working and living in the United States through Temporary Protected Status, Vance criticized the Biden administration for granting that status to Haitians, asserting that the government had “illegally” given them that protection and saying that he would still refer to them as “illegal aliens” anyway.
Not only are they here legally, but most of them have nothing to do with Biden. The first big waves of Haitian migration to Springfield began during the middle of the Trump administration and the parole program for Haitians goes back to the Reagan era.

TPS is a legal status created by Congress in 1990, which allows the executive branch to declare that immigrants from certain distressed countries can stay in the US temporarily. One of the bedrock principles of immigration law is that Congress can do pretty much anything it wants in regard to giving the executive discretion to carry out immigration policies, and the TPS program is a very straightforward law of that type.

Vance is a Senator and has a law degree from Yale. He knows this and doesn't care. And what is the result? From today's Wall Street Journal: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/springfield ... _permalink
The morning after the debate, parents in Springfield kept their children home en masse. Several schools, City Hall and the state motor vehicle offices in Springfield were forced to evacuate after receiving bomb threats. The city canceled its two-day CultureFest celebrating diversity, arts and culture “in light of recent threats and safety concerns.”

The neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe took a victory lap for its presence in the town, boasting on Sept. 11, “We are on the ground in Springfield weekly—we even showed up to their City Council Meeting.”

Vance, meanwhile, has continued to defend his claims.
In fact Vance is doubling down with new lies about Haitians causing disease. From the same WSJ article:
Vance has also added to his claims about Haitians, saying on social media that communicable diseases have been on the rise in Springfield because of the Haitian migration.

Information from the county health department, however, shows a decrease in infectious disease cases countywide, with 1,370 reported in 2023—the lowest since 2015. The tuberculosis case numbers in the county are so low (four in 2023, three in 2022, one in 2021) that any little movement can bring a big percentage jump. HIV cases did increase to 31 in 2023, from 17 in 2022 and 12 in 2021. Overall, sexually transmitted infection cases decreased to 965 in 2023, the lowest since 2015.

I hate to break it to you, but the Haitians do eat cats. It is a cultural thing they do. It does not mean they are eating every cat. It means they do eat cat at times.

Try hard not to offend. Try harder not to be offended.
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not after you.

Fact check: Disinformation against Haitian migrants is now baselessly connecting the pet-eating accusations to Vodou rituals fueling a decades-long urban myth.

The claim that "Haitians eat pets" is an unfounded urban legend that has persisted for decades. It is now gaining renewed traction despite lacking any solid evidence.

. . .

The campaign reached a new level when some users claimed that sacrificing animals, including cats, is a common practice in Haitian Vodou rituals.

Elon Musk, owner of X, shared one of these videos with his 197.3 million followers. In it, a woman who claims to have a Haitian background states that sacrificing animals like cats is a common practice among Haitians, one linked to their Vodou culture. Most Haitians live in poverty, so eating cats might not be uncommon there, the user alleged.

Numerous other videos with similar claims have also gained millions of views.

Experts have dismissed these claims, including Dr. Ingrid Kummels, a Latin American ethnologist at Freie Universität Berlin. "Afro-Caribbean religions, including Haitian Vodou, only involve the sacrifice of animals considered edible, such as chickens and goats. Cats and dogs are not part of these practices," Kummels told DW, adding that animal sacrifices in Vodou are reserved for significant rituals.

Dr. Grete Viddal, an independent ethnologist specializing in Caribbean Vodou culture, noted a long-standing expression about Haitians and cats. "There's an expression in Haiti about extreme poverty, saying someone is so poor they might have to eat cats. But the idea that Haitians eat cats in Vodou rituals is pure fiction. It's simply not true," she told DW.

I have yet to find any evidence that supports the claim that Haitians culturally eat cats.

I'd appreciate if anyone could provide the name of a traditional Haitian dish that uses cat as an ingredient. Here's a list of from the World Animal Foundation about which countries eat cats and dogs --

I can assure you that is not a comprehensive list. I have personally been to a country not found on that list, and been offered "dog" for dinner. I politely declined.

Ok...I've been looking without finding anything. What's a traditional Haitian dish that uses cat as an ingredient?
