Modern day Anabaptist perception towards postcards, handwritten letters, snail mail, etc?

Post by steve-in-kville »

I write a lot, both for my occupation as well as recreationally. I am a pen and paper snob of sorts, always trying new pens and notepads and such. Anyways, whenever I want to try a new product, I almost always search for a review on YouTube to get the lowdown on it before buying it.

One channel in particular is hosted by a lady that takes handwritten letters and postcards to another level. She also handmakes Christmas cards and birthday cards, but that is a subject for another day.

Anyways, she showed off her "writing kit" and the paper, pens and envelopes she uses in her written communications with family and friends. She had quite the system and was obviously very passionate about it!

Anyways, I got thinking when was the last time I typed, or even wrote, a letter to someone, and sent it through the mail. It has to be at least a decade or more. Email, social media, and now these apps like WhatsApp have by and large done away with the pen and paper letters.

Does anyone still communicate the "old way"? Or is everything electronic for us now?

(P.S. anyone remember the scrapbooking/ink stamper thing that was all the rage about twenty years back? The lady folks would have parties to buy and sell supplies and such?

I love to send cards to folks for all occasions but especially for those who need encouragement and I make 99% of my cards which I enjoy doing- doing in on the computer and print them. I do send a letter occasionally to someone who doesn't have access to a computer but tend to email or text 'letters'. I still handwrite thank you notes.
Now my writing is no where near calligraphy style but it is hand written- tho occasionally I will type and print a letter too- if it is longer than usual.

Never did the scrapbooking thing

"Stamp it up" was some MLM that used to be popular but doesn't seem to be catching on with the younger generation. When people want fancy wedding invitations now they pay to get it done online, it seems.

So that was an actual MLM? I couldn't remember. I know my wife was invited to those parties and did come home with a few things, but mostly to be polite. At the time, we didn't have the money for that stuff. To each their own, I guess.

Yep, another MLM headquarted out of Utah. Most states have laws that ban MLMs but Utah and Florida are the exceptions. The Mormons seem to be completely fine with running scams on other people to make money.

I am part of some circle letters and some of the participantes write their letters by hand and others type theirs. I prefer to type mine, because it is easier and I like the spell check feature. However as a secretary for a small business, I am very picky as to the pens I use. The uniball impact 207 is my favorite

I see more and more young Amish women creating all of their own invitations, name cards, etc. Special cursive fonts, etc.

I still write an occasional letter by hand, mostly to my mom, but my handwriting is horrific, not only because I am left handed, but also because I quickly get hand cramps and then my writing is shaky. (Some days I can hardly write out a check clearly.) So while I still do a lot of hand-written note taking, I usually type when it's for someone else to read.

Perhaps they'll buy up all the old Stamp-It! collections at yard sales.

It is near impossible for me to print. If I need to fill a form out, I can start off printing but quickly revert to cursive. To that end, I can look back on my notebook at work and determine how much coffee I had in my system. Too little, cannot read, too much, still cannot read. My fonts change and the size of my writing gets bigger or smaller, depending.
