Christian ethics and theology with an Anabaptist perspective

I know that handguns are carried to church by members in "good standing" in these groups -

While I wouldn't personally want to be in the vicinity of a bonfire full of ammunition, I wonder if it actually would be as dangerous as it sounds? Certainly the bullets wouldn't fly anywhere near as far as if shot through the barrel of a firearm.

The casings just explode. Bullet doesn't really go anywhere. Don't ask how I know this.... ;)

There is apparently a shortage of ammo. Likely there is someone who wants it unburnt.

Some of these comments on ammo in a fire are illuminating.

There’s not a cartridge sold in your typical sporting goods store or gun shop that I would need more than a 1/2 plywood to protect myself if they were thrown in a fire.

With .22 Long Rifle, in my youth I used to throw a handful in the campfire when no one was looking and laugh when they started exploding. I’ve been hit by the bullets. You barely feel it. It’s the shells that fly the most. But then, a friend did it and a shell split open and hit him above the eye and lacerated the skin. Oops. I quit that.

I’ve fought fires where there was a lot of ammo stored. Lot of racket. Very little danger. The scary part is loaded guns going off. You never know where it’s pointed.

Incidentally, if you give your ammo away for "disposal", it ends up getting sold, usually to a firearms dealer, who will then sell it to someone else. Actually disposing of ammunition properly is very expensive and dangerous. (Doing it at home is not that hard, but you can't do that commercially.)

So the easiest thing to do is just sell it to a federally licenced firearms dealer, who then has to take proper custody of it. There is no shortage of such dealers willing to buy any and all ammo.

Yeah. I really wish I could advise people against keeping loaded guns stored when they aren't actively carrying them. There really is not a case to be made for keeping a gun "cocked 'n' locked" unless you need that extra 2 seconds to draw when you're carrying.

I knew that...but...um...well, you know.....Didn't want to admit I may have been part of an experiment proving the point. :D

I’m still stuck on this... why do Anabaptists need handguns at church?
