Do you reject modern culture?

Post by Franklin »

I ask this because I am looking for people who are not part of modern culture. There are 2 ways to not be part of modern culture: reject modern culture or be isolated from modern culture. These are reflected in answers 2 and 3. I think very conservative Mennonites like Nationwide and Eastern Pennsylvania reject modern culture. So do ultra-orthodox Jews. At the other extreme, the Japanese are isolated from modern culture. They live on islands, have a very distinct language, and have a strong culture. Somewhere in the middle are the Mennonites of north Mexico. They are physically isolated but speak English and are exposed to modern culture through the internet. Their religion offers some resistance to modern culture, but I haven't spent enough time there to judge how much.

Since I do not want to interact with members of modern culture, the answers to this poll will determine whether it makes sense for me to remain on this forum.

It's hard to answer because the criteria are defined by you. Perhaps you could offer a rubric so we can understand your definitions.

There are many Amish (not all), OO Mennonites, Hutterites, Old German Baptist Brethren, etc. who reject many parts of modern culture. I assume you include them with Eastern and Nationwide?

Yes, I think the more traditional Anabaptists generally reject modern culture.

Presumably you want a definition of "modern culture". The problem is that cultures can't be defined. If you live in America, then just look at current mainstream American culture to represent modern culture.

It's hard for me to imagine what modern culture is if Japan is excluded. Presumably you mean modern western culture?

Modern culture started as decaying western culture, but then went global through the internet. Japan managed to avoid infection because they are high tech and developed their own technology and their own entertainment.

"Their own entertainment" features virtual AI girlfriends. While it may be distinguishable from modern western culture, I'm not convinced it's significantly better.

Tell me that you don’t know anything about Japanese entertainment without telling me you don’t know anything about Japanese entertainment.

Japan is facing a demographic crisis with super low birth rates because their youth aren’t getting married or even dating. https://apnews.com/article/japan-birth- ... 071e5b0b9b

Part of the reason is economic — the high cost of living, bleak economy and unhealthy work culture. The other reasons include the impact of technology and entertainment that end up discouraging or hindering face-to-face human interaction.
