Worldly Purchase?

When it just doesn't fit anywhere else.

Valerie, if you are still not sure what you want to do, go see undershepherd; check out his inventory of newer used Volkswagens. You wouldn't be the first person to drive a distance to buy from him. I understand that is where Ira Wagler goes to buy his vehicles. I think the only complaint Ira seems to have about Amish Black is that he should have bought a four door Jeep instead of the two door.

I wish it were that easy for me to do that-
I get almost 2 weeks vacation a year- with one child in FL & one in CA- guess where all my vacation time is used? Yes, with the family-
PLUS with only one of us able to drive I am in a dilemma when it comes to returning my car (or trade in) to get another, it's really hard to drive both cars-
At least he is someone we could trust- Neil really has trust issues buying used cars which is why he always insists on new- at least for our 'one' car we rely on.

Ira Wagler- Isn't he former Amish, wrote a book? I think he is from our area (Holmes County?)
Is Amish Black the Jeep?

I do in fact get my VW serviced at the dealer. The 40K check/service for a DSG is 750$. Mine is more like 400$ for the check that includes transmission service.

Local VW independent won't touch transmissions for some reason. He is close to worthless, and if you have a major problem his advice is to trade it in.

Well that is pretty high even for VW dealerships. You see the problem is that the book calls for 3.2 hours to change the fluid and filter on a DSG when in fact it takes all of about 30 minutes to do and if their labor rate is $120+ per hour and they charge by the book that gets up in the $400 range. The fluid is $24 per liter and it takes just over 4 liters of the fluid plus a $20 filter. In fact you can buy an OEM VW filter and fluid change kit with 5 liters of DSG fluid for $134 on Amazon. Still no way it should cost $750 even at the dealership. I have heard of as high as $600.

The fluid for your conventional automatic is about $19 per liter and it takes 6 liters to replace. The filter is about the same cost as the DSG at $19. The book calls for 1.2 hours to change the fluid and it takes about 30 minutes.

If I was you I would find an independent shop that can work on your VW. There really isn't anything special about them. Pretty much any reputable shop should be able to handle all the maintenance and routine repairs. For a $500 price different on the DSG service you could just about justify driving all the way to my shop in Harrisonburg. lol
One of my co-workers has a GTI with the DSG. Works fine, but he was upset for days after the bill........

The 750 included all of the 40K service, and not just the DSG. Still outrageous. Most independent mechanics in these parts won't touch VWs because of the "special tools" they need. Many actually have signs stating that.

I will be in Harrisonburg in early june, and it will be at just about 40K for my 2013 golf, 2.5l 5 cyl. "normal" automatic. Now if we can figure a way.....

Nope, just attending a wedding and then swinging down to Harrisburg exclusively to avail myself of the services of undershepherd's shop.

No, Ira is from Lancaster and yes he bought a black two door jeep, went to visit some Amish friends who dubbed it Amish Black. But the two door version isn't good when he wants to take Amish friends along.

Did he move? ;)

I tell them apart by remembering that the "son" is of lower status (not a state capital) and lower latitude.
