Keeping people in the dark is not a good strategy for relationship with others. In fact, it breeds suspicion and distrust.
Not trying to keep anyone in the dark. Not really my story to share, but that is the basic details.

It is inconvenient that something that so many people used and benefited from is under one person's control and can be terminated without notice. Naturally if that person paid for everything, what can you say. It seems to me that the ideal thing would be to have a forum controlled by a team of admins or an organization and financed by donations from a variety of sources rather than a single donor. Not that I don't appreciate what you're doing, Robert. I just wonder what will keep this from happening again.Robert wrote:Hans shared that the server crashed, they lost all the data and there was no backup to rebuild it from. in the past, various members asked about sharing expenses of MD, possibly like a magazine subscription, or other avenue, to offset costs .. i don't recall Hans or Robert responding, no resolution.
at this moment, i'm having challenges with FB.
i don't use FB a lot, i have 1 "friend," my daughter, i use it to see her family pictures and to keep up on what they are doing. now, with this FB problem, i have no access to anything on FB. this may be temporary. i'm thinking it over. life is good without FB. i miss my daughter's page.
but, you are correct, it does come down to: everything invested is under others' control.
it appears that is a cyberspace dilemma.
i agree about appreciation for all Hans and Robert and the mods and other volunteers have done over the years! this should not be overlooked. it really is a lot, it must be a labor of love.
mike, were you mikef on MD? or another?

SS, i like the way you put your former MD username in your signature line. helpful!
at first, i wondered if this was an "admin" thing, but, evidently not.

I used this same registration method on MD. It helps to filter out the spammers and bots. The instructions as for one or two lines to validate you as a human. It doesn't ask for a long introduction. This is not a change, just most who already had access at MD did not have to go back through it. I spend DAYS and DAYS removing all the bot and spam accounts on MD. There were thousands, no exaggeration. I don't want to have to do the same here.temporal1 wrote: yeah, i guess that's one change that might not go very well.![]()

I think that is perfectly justifiable.Robert wrote:I used this same registration method on MD. It helps to filter out the spammers and bots. Would you consider asking the new member to first go to the introduction thread and introduce themselves? Or perhaps clarify that the welcome page they are on is hidden from others, and they would need to introduce themselves once they are approved?...not a big deal to me, but just an idea.

funny. it was a neat way to begin MN. an initial default to Introductions.
but then it vanished!
(my first post was kind-of a message to Gene, he won't get it.) i have faith, he'll survive.
smilies question:
on MD, each one had an explanation of what it meant.
i don't see those here. i don't know what the new smilies represent.
so, i would be afraid to use them.

This may not work on iPads and other non-rodentized devices, but it does work on real computers.
