I was a research and development computer scientist for most of my career. I had a serious interest in biblical Greek and linguistics. At a certain point, I felt a call to work in Bible translation and developing resources for interpreting the Bible, which is what I do now.
We are empty nesters and we own our home, so finances are not as big a deal. I think the main impact on my family is that I am very absorbed in this work ... and it helps us make contact with people all over the world. There are people who care about us and pray for us when we have difficulties.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Re: Changing careers mid-life?
Some years ago, I was working in a woodshop. I was just starting in real estate- owned a rental property myself, plus helped managing a few others. A realtor took me under his wing, so I and signed up and paid for the schooling to get my real estate license.
The woodshop I worked at had a fire that wiped out all its inventory. Owners pressured me into putting off school to help build it all back up. I broke and never went to school. Got most of my money back that I paid, but not all of it. I should have listened to my own gut and went through with it.
I'm at a form in the road where I have an opportunity to change career directions. I'm in my mid-40's and thought I'm too old to learn anything new. I made a commitment to do what is best for me and my family, not what someone else benefits from. I guess we shall see.

40s is not old. And certainly not to old to change.the-real-steve wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 3:36 pm Some years ago, I was working in a woodshop. I changed careers into classroom teaching and walked into my first classroom at age 43. That was 18 years ago.

I don’t think you’re too old. I think you’ve got some promising options.the-real-steve wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 4:40 pmthe-real-steve wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 3:36 pm Some years ago, I was working in a woodshop. After we had moved back to the States and later resigned from WBT, I wanted to go back to school and become a Middle School teacher. I was 52. I got lots of negative push-back from lots of angles, so I let it go. Sometimes I still wonder.

Are there any women here?
I have been a stay-at-home mom for around 26 years, since the later part of my first pregnancy.
I think I’ll soon be transitioning from stay-at-home mom to stay-at-home wife. That’s a promotion, right?
I kinda flew the idea of finishing my degree & getting an outside job, but nobody was very excited about the idea. Even some of my ‘liberal’ friends were like, “You worked at your career for 26 years! Retire & take it easy!”
I do have a small business at home, and our teens are not moved out yet. I had fun with them when they were all younger, and I am doing my best to learn how to manage a house full of emotional, opinionated young people. (Send help!)

My wife was one of the original employees when Good's Store opened in Schaefferstown! I think she would enjoy doing that again if she had the time. Recently she took a part time gig as a caretaker for a family friend, a few hours a day. Not consistent, but gets her some walking-around money.
