Aurien isn’t saying she can’t find suitable dolls for her own children, but congratulations for being the guy who says “If you don’t like what the marketplace is marketing to you and forcing on your neighbour, just go build your own everything!”

We should all be very concerned about pushing LGBT anything in children.
I don't think the marketplace is forcing anything on anyone and I'm quite sure that 99% of what you'll find in the toy section of Wal-Mart is still going to be properly 'gendered.' If anything, the toy market is MORE gendered today than it was decades ago. There is never going to be any shortage of sexualized Barbie dolls on the store shelves complete with appropriately gendered fashions if that's what you want.

I think you guys should dial back the alarm. 50 years ago my proper Mennonite mother went to great lengths to make sure that there were no toy guns or army men or anything cammo or GI-Joe in our house (we were all boys) as she was afraid that the "militarist agenda" of the toy industry was going to turn us into soldiers or something. Of course we still played soldiers and "cowboys and indians" and "cops and robbers" with all the neighbor kids on the block, pretty much endlessly, and my dad finally overruled her and let me get an air rifle. None of us became soldiers as a result of the toys we played with at 6 years old.

I'm not going to engage in an argument with you about this. I don't tend to be an alarmist about these things. I'm not the kind of person who goes around seeing a demon (or in this case an LGBT agenda) behind every bush. I do know what I've seen happening throughout my life though and LGBT things are definitely being normalized. That is all I have to say.

I can fully understand the concerns about pushing the LGBT agenda on our children. This is why parents need to be ever vigilant in raising their children and instilling our Christian values into their hearts and minds. As a young girl I remember desperately wanting a Barbie doll like all my public school friends had. However my parents would not have it, as they felt the form of the Barbie doll was highly sexual and unrealistic for young girls. They did find another doll with a less shapely form and my dear mother sewed modest clothing for my doll. However I rarely played with her, as we lived on a farm and there was so many interesting things to do outside, playing with the cats, dogs, etc. Later when our children were growing up, there were certain toys we did not purchase, like war toys, and other weird creepy creatures from certain TV programs.

The bottom line is that the parents need to teach their children, protect their children, and not leave them to the mercy of a ever declining culture. This is something parents have been doing for decades. And hopefully they can continue protecting and teaching their children their Christian values.

I also find Barbie dolls and war figurines like G.I. Joe to be toys which promote values in conflict to following the Bible.

The introduction of Barbie dolls also was part of a big shift in the culture, and one which some people were wise to speak out against. And no, the “free market” is not the right way to fix this. These things that are toxic for children and for society need to be shamed, banned, boycotted, and the people who create them shamed and outcast from mainstream society until they can reform their bad behaviour and stop trying to pollute the average family with their degeneracy.

What you are describing with boycotts and shaming is the free market in action.

What would not be the free market is some sort of government “ministry of toys” that that vets and approves/disapproves all toys before they reach the market.

Did anyone here call for political action or legislation?

You used the word “banned” right above. That generally implies some sort of law or legislation.

I’d like to see something like the Hays Code again, where the banning is done by local governments accountable to the people and religious groups.

No. What I do think is: (1) 98% of what you find in the toy aisle is junk, (2) kids already play with lots of gender-neutral toys with no apparently ill effect, and (3) this is mostly about adults, not kids.

It's an old adage that most fishing lures are designed to catch fishermen not fish. I expect the same thing is happening here. Matel is trying to market to liberal parents and the kids are mostly not going to care or notice.

Twenty years ago there was a big hubub from some circles about whether Barney the Dinosaur was gay and whether the purple teletubby was gay. Or something like that, I don't even remember. These are shows for pre-schoolers. It was all rather silly. Jerry Falwell sounded the alarm bells about Tinky Winky the teletubby in the late 90s. https://www.nytimes.com/1999/02/11/us/n ... tubby.html

There are lots of toys that I didn't particularly want into my house when my kids were younger. I screened a lot of it out but some stuff slipped through anyway. Shrug. They came out fine and no worse for the wear. I think this sort of thing is an utter triviality compared to much more important questions of safety such as what they eat, how they exercise, whether they have safe streets to walk on to school, whether they are appropriately challenged academically, and so forth.
