FB Pages, Websites, of interest

Post by temporal1 »

This thread is for sharing FB Pages, Websites, and/or other sources of interest.
(Maybe somewhat like lester’s “Blogs” thread.) :)
Blogs / Other category

Some sites have both FB pages and websites. i’ll try to add both, knowing some do not use FB.
Some may have youtube pages. Often, i read-only. Sometimes, i un-follow, for different reasons.

Entries can be serious, and, for-fun. :D

“DESCRIPTION
The Study of Antiquity and the Middle Ages is a group for the amateur historian, the scholar and everyone in between. This group exists for anyone who wants to discuss Antiquity and the Middle Ages from the obscure to the heatedly controversial. I have two rules and they are as sweet as they are simple. Rule number one if asked, provide sources and references. Rule number two do not let emotions get the better of you, personal attacks and insults are not tolerated. We should all be able to talk about history without trying to murder each other with a keyboard or pad. Enjoy.

GROUP TYPE
Study Group”
i even .. follow a couple of German language sites, even tho i barely remember any German from Jr High years. “i heard,” my father’s family came from Stuttgart, no confirmation. one day, maybe i’ll find a solid connection. i was told, they migrated through PA and Virginia. i have found some connections that way, but not “solid,” in my mind. i’ll add the random German links i follow later.

This thread is for general interest. Any interest is welcome. Maybe others will be interested, or have more to add. Warnings about problematic sites are appreciated, too. :)

For years of my life, i read about various famous gardens in the world, open to the public.
In September 2007, i got to visit Butchart Gardens, Vancouver Island, with my son, who moved to WA that year for work. we took a ferry across Puget Sound, then a bus took us to the gardens.
it was a lovely day. i follow their FB page as a reminder. :)

Find A Grave
http://www.findagrave.com

i’ve viewed this site over a few years. not frequently.
this spring, i located a few loved ones’ and, ancestral graves i did not expect to ever find.
it appears, lots of folks have added info+pictures to the data base(s). it seems much more comprehensive now.

if your first search nets nothing, don’t give up. :)

this evening, i found solid info on a long-lost uncle of my father. born in 1873.
all i’ve ever known was that he moved to Wisconsin, they lost contact.
i’ve now found quite a lot, he married, and, he lived in Wisconsin, actually, not a long way away.
unfortunately, it appears, no children. i was kinda hoping to find a distant cousin there.

he registered for WWI in 1918, at 44! it ended in 1918.
no sign that he went or was in the military.
that registration card has a lot of info. no picture. but description and contact info, including work.
he’s becoming a real person to me. :)

at this point, i’m thinking i may find many more.
a lot of people have contributed time+effort to this site. it’s interesting to think about.

i’ve always gone in “fits+starts,” i dedicate some time, but have no plans to make a big pursuit.
it can become a life’s work! i’ve known a few people that have done it that way.

City-Data.com
http://www.city-data.com/

i’ve used this off+on, for years.
esp for when my adult children have gone to school, moved for jobs, sometimes, to learn about visiting places.

one helpful feature is the “cost of living comparison” at the bottom of each city’s page.
i use this to remind me why i can’t afford to live near my family.

FACEBOOK CHANGE?
has anyone noticed the disappearance of “liked” and “following” features on their FB pages?
they seemed to have recently removed some of these (original?) features?

one reason i do not want to depend on FB too much is, they change/remove/limit content as they please. you can’t be sure of finding things you put there. you might, you might not.

the “forever” internet can be quite a hodge-podge of “here+gone.” without warning or explanation.

This morning I was out running to a small, old, obscure cemetery back in the woods and I shocked a man and his wife who thought they would be alone back there. Turns out they were there to photograph the gravestones for http://www.findagrave.com. We talked about various gravesite I run past on the trails around here, he has photographed quite a few of them. And he's sent me an email asking about others and asking me to let him know when I encounter a new gravesite back in the woods.

He had good information. He asked me if I was a particular man who is the other person he would be most likely to encounter back there.

it’s very interesting to think of the numbers of quiet folk who take up this effort.
over the years, so much information has been added by people just volunteering and adding to the data base. it’s impressive.

the site now has so much more information!
years ago, when i first noticed it, i found few results. now, i EXPECT to find results!
it has changed so much. people doing just like the ones you met.

i don’t understand your last sentence. :?

There's a man who grew up in my neighborhood back when it was farmland, long before I was here. For many years, he and I were the only people I ever saw back in the woods where this family cemetery is, he walked the trails with his dog and I ran them. He is part of the family that owns the cemetery, and the photographer asked if I was that man, asking by name. (I don't want to give his name away on a public website.)

There is now a road out to the cemetery and a highway is being built along the bottom of the hill underneath the cemetery. This highway wiped out much of the woods that this man and I used to use back there. Currently, I can run back there and run on an empty highway, which is kind of fun.
