Sightseeing. Great place to visit, no matter what the season. We could not leave the ferry due to ice on the roads, so went back to see what we missed, This was one of the sights:https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... romsoe.jpgR7ehr wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2026 2:09 pmWhatever were you doing in Tromso?Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2026 10:54 amJust had to take my shoes of on an inner-shlingren flight from Tromso to Helsinki. Apparently, all they have is magnetometers. They gave up on my wife and let her through; she has metal everywhere, knees, neck, and foot. I don't recall if it was enforced on the domestic NZ flight, but I was connecting from an international flight (the domestic terminal at AKL is separate with no airside connection, so I did have to go through security) and didn't have large amounts of liquids anyway. Intra-Schengen it has certainly been enforced. The limits don't really bother me since I pack light.
It's the shoe rule that the rest of the world has thankfully not copied us on.
We are on an AMS-IAD as we type.

One of the worst parts about security theatre is all the instructions and signage that never get removed. (COVID made this problem even worse; at the dentist yesterday, there were stern warnings reminding us to wear masks and explaining why all the staff wore masks, which none of them did at all. Likewise, I saw a sign exhorting 6 foot social distancing a few months ago in a doctors' office.)ohio jones wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2026 7:32 pm BCN had signs about shoes but nobody was removing theirs.
It is, of course, risk-free for low level staff to simply never take signs down, whereas taking down a sign they shouldn't have would have high risk for them. So useless signs and procedures tend to just stack up, and a competent citizen has to learn which ones they're supposed to ignore.

FIFA 2026 brought fans to America for football, but the U.S. experience is keeping them interested far beyond the matches.
Tourists are enjoying the stadiums, the food, the cities, the nightlife, the fan zones, and the feeling of being part of something huge. What started as a World Cup trip is becoming a full American experience.
This video explains why so many fans are surprised by how much they enjoy the USA — and why some do not want the trip to end.
Nicht immer passiert das Wichtigste im Mittelpunkt.
Neben dem Platz folgt den Stimmen, Reaktionen und kleinen Verschiebungen am Rand — genau dort, wo man oft früher merkt, dass sich etwas verändert.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.
