Auctions :)

Hopefully, this topic will be general, diverse, of interest. “Something for everyone?!”
There are many types of auctions, with many purposes.

i was surprised when undershepherd posted about his interest and ventures:
maybe he’ll stop by for an update.

But it was a lot of fun and I did come home with the Rookie Award which is given to the highest scoring competitor who has been an auctioneer for less than 2 years. Anyway here is the video of me in the competition if you want to watch.

I spend many hours of my life buying at auctions. Unfortunately it is almost 100% for business; I don't have time to attend auctions for personal/pleasure like I used to. It's enjoyable, but such a time-consuming way to buy things.

One of the oldest auction houses here in Holmes County (Kauffman Auctions) greatly expanded the use of on-line only auctions during 2020. I have fairly often bought stuff in that way. You don't get to look it over first, and some things aren't what you expected, but you can do the bidding from home, and only drive out to the location if you have a winning bid. I buy mostly tools, like recently a pick/grub ax, a large crow bar that I have used a great deal, and a complete weight-leveling Class IV hitch system. (The latter I got on a $7.00 bid, so with the 10% premium, it was $7.70.)

But a couple of years ago I bought a compressor unit, and because I wasn't able to see it ahead of time, it's MUCH larger than I expected. Need to try to resell it. I should have expected that, because it is a two-stage compressor. But they had the name wrong in the on-line ad, so I was not able to get information on it until after I picked it up and read the name plate for myself.

Is there no recourse if they list significantly inaccurate information?

I don't think so. One thing I've noticed is that years ago, when I went to most of the Machinery Auctions in My Hope (3 x a year), the auctioneers really knew what most everything was. Now, even at live auctions, the auctioneers often do not know what they are looking at. And things listed on the on-line auctions are now quite often mislabeled. The post photos that are blurry.

An example of a mislabeled item: A part of a tractor three-point system, the upper, adjustable arm, I think the correct name is either upper link or center link. Anyway, they called it a hydraulic cylinder or hydraulic ram, I don't remember now which. It really is a 'buyer beware' situation. Some on-line auctions have an earlier inspection date, but many don't give the address, just a general location, like 'Millersburg' for the last auction where I bought something. It turned out to be in Benton. (They put the actual location on the invoice they send via email.) On one occasion the advertisement said that the additional charge was 10%. but they charged my card for 15%. I sent an email reply, pointing out the discrepancy, but they never replied. Fortunately I hadn't bought much stuff, so the difference was insignificant. I just thought they should know about a mistake like that. Another thing is that just like with on-site auctions, where you show your ID to register, your bidding # is different every time. So when I'm bidding on things in an auction that has things that I think my son might be interested in, we tell each other our bidding numbers so that we do not bid against one another.

It may be worthwhile to pass on your concern to the people who run Kaufman auctions.

I do not think they would want to be associated with the general lack of integrity you described above.

There is no "buyer beware" when items are not listed properly. I mean, I can't really list a bale of moldy hay and mislabel it as a bag of silver coins, right?

We attend the many benefit auctions in Holmes County OH.
They’re an inspiration to me as it’s one place I see Amish & Mennonites drop their differences to work together for a good cause.

One can get all kinds of things at them, but many times you pay ABOVE what you’d pay elsewhere, but it’s for a good cause. I’ve seen quilts get over $5,000!

Lots of great food at these too- and it’s all by donation.
I don’t know how far you are from Arthur IL but you can attend their Haiti Benefit Auction - they hold those inIL, OH, PA, FL to name a few. I think that video is in Mt. Hope IH where we go all the time, they have auctions of all kinds. Very enjoyable. The auctioneers crack me up.

More conservative groups often discourage members from going to these kind of pageants.
