2018 / RZehr / Good things about the Trump Presidency
http://forum.mennonet.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1343
OP:
RZehr:
I’ve heard many people say specific things they don’t like, such as dishonesty, morals, etc.
I also hear people allude that there are things they like.

What are some of the specific things you like about Trump, or his policies, or his administration etc.? Especially things that you think may be unique to this administration vs other Republicans.

I am currently overseas and was asked by a taxi driver this question.
i’ve enjoyed the spirit of RZehr’s “Good things” threads - in the Politics category. :D

i’ve been thinking about a “sister” thread in Homestead with similar theme/challenge for this difficult year of 2020. There have been good things. :)

i just stumbled upon a piece printed in QUILL&SCROLL, in another thread, thought it would be a good place to begin: http://forum.mennonet.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3276

“Blessings of the Recent Plague” / Pastor Craig Alan Myers / Blue River Church
http://www.blueriverchurch.org/wordpres ... Plague.pdf

Blue River Church of the Brethren
http://www.blueriverchurch.org/

Even though this is the starting place, i’m thinking of home, family, neighbor, and personal “good things,” thus, the Homestead category. :)

A good thing about 2020 is it is almost over! :laugh

But seriously, there were some positives such as that it was nice earlier in the year when the bars were closed, and entertainment was shut down. Not that I was anti-entertainment but so much of it is sinful rubbish. I also liked evening drives when there were hardly any cars on the roads because people were staying at home. Forced work-at-home was rough at first, but after I got used to it I loved it because I get an extra 45 minute sleep and walk the dog in the morning. I can go to an appointment in an hour or two instead of taking half the day off because of the longer drive. Oh, I do not miss the Detroit freeway traffic or dodging cars to cross the main road in front of my building. Also I had a week-long class about 2000 mies away that I didn't want to bother with, and was of minimal value to my job anyway, and it got cancelled because of Covid travel restrictions is some states, so class size got too small.

Great thread, T1.
The reasons Fidelio detailed, I agree that all were very good aspects of 2020. I would add that families were less distracted from each other and spent more time together. One friend commented that by the time everyone had finished their online work, be it job or school, they were content to turn off the wretched thing and actually talk to each other.

Telehealth appointments are a good thing for those of us in our 80s. Sitting in a waiting room with people coughing has never appealed to me.

Most importantly, most of us realized the importance of church and fellowship because we could no longer meet. May we never take that for granted again.

Bars may have been closed, but drinking at home sky-rocketed. Big time.

Domestic abuse also had a sharp increase.

I was sad that the liquor stores stayed open. I can drive 4 miles to my son's house and pass about 5 stores that are either liquor stores or sell alcohol. Sad commentary on modern society.

In my neighborhood, neighbors are getting to know each other better. People are walking a lot, smiling at each other, looking out for each other.

Zoom is turning out to be useful for communicating with friends and former church members living in other places. It's getting easier to communicate with more people.

When the economy is on the fritz, we don't know what the future is bringing, and there are concerns about health, some people are thinking about what they want their lives to mean. In my area, at least, volunteering is up.

Our state liquor stores had closed for a while. Beer distributors remained open, but most became curb-side pickup only. But some grocery stores still sold beer & wine like normal (those that held licenses anyway). One local distributor refused to make changes and remained open the entire time.

My hope for this thread is (in the spirit of RZehr’s threads) to point out 2020 positives .. it seems this forum and the world strongly covers negatives. One thread out of .. hundreds? :?

Your point is valid and sadly interesting. Bunny Trails? a new thread?

Here’s a possible positive about your negative:

Is it possible these abusive situations have been enabled and covered up by “normal” life, and there is NEED to expose them? To get help to where help is needed?

i’m asking rhetorically.
if discussion is wanted, it could continue in Bunny Trails. or even in a CAM thread?

A definite positive of 2020 is that God Sovereignly allowed our Supreme Court to once again return to a Conservative/Christian majority! With this we pray for that to also be reflected in their rulings.
