Most or all of this drama, humiliation, wasted taxpayer money could be spared -
with even modest attempt at presenting balanced facts from the start.

I thought about this after I posted. Maybe a Canadian Orangeman would be good. ;)

I was an orangeman. Living in Kansas now my top fruits I am growing are Jujube, hybrid persimmon, and Pear. But Lord willing I plan to build a basement greenhouse and grow satsuma oranges and other small tropicals like ginger and pineapple in it. I already grow turmeric as a seasonal crop, a very tropical herb. Satsumas are for sure the best sweetest fresh orange, and take the most cold too, I've grown several satsuma cultivars along side several other oranges such as Washington navel and ate them fresh unlimited. Walmart oranges are a crime really.

The underground greenhouse idea is intriguing. :D

i’m glad to hear of these oranges. :D
in the 1950’s, my aunt+uncle in Reedley, CA would mail a crate of oranges to us for Christmas.
a superb mid-winter treat. we-kids were fascinated with them. delivered to our door!
as you say, today’s oranges are disappointing.

i’d like to be your neighbor.

I quite like this photo of your greenhouse: are those blocks of sod? It would be very thermally efficient and cost less to warm. You’re giving me good ideas, Paul.

Turmeric has become extremely popular in medicine. Instead of using steroids for low level inflammation they have found turmeric works just as well without steroidal side effects. I think you’re smart to develop it as a crop.

Thanks Max! It is not my greenhouse, but I hope to build one similar in a year. I want to make it rectangle, perhaps about 24'x50', with the 50' side facing south and the south slope of the roof a durable 1/4" poly or unbreakable glass perhaps, and the north slope of the roof I plan to use metal and insulate it so as to shield the cold north winds. And I may put a quality 24 hr wood stove (Blaze King king size is the best) in there to keep temps above 60F in the sometimes cloudy week here and there. I want the floor to be a full 6 feet below ground level to take advantage of thermal warmth.
I will need vents to open in summer.
I also may put in a fan/ground system to circulate the air through underground pipes too heat/cool.

In an environment like that what do you use to control disease?
