Re: RVing

We may go look at at a 2008 Ford Expedition today. Need a new vehicle and the sale of the land in Texas will fund it.

My concern is that it will haul a RV quite well. Wife has been wanting one for years. I keep telling her it is much cheaper to get a motel room the few times we travel.

Tell your wife that RVing is for those who like to take longer vacations of a week or more. That's where the savings can kick in.

An Expedition might be able to pull a trailer depending on the weight of the trailer. Before getting a trailer, check the tow weight capacity of the Expedition. Also check to see if the Expedition has been fitted for towing (reinforced frame, transmission adjustments, etc.). I've never owned a Ford so I cannot help you in that regard. Remember too that whatever is loaded into the passenger vehicle itself has to be counted into the overall towing weight for the sake of the transmission and engine.

People in my family quote the old adage: "If you can't afford a Dodge, then dodge a Ford."

From my Dad's experience in owning Fords (though never an Expedition), might I suggest that having an RV in tow might be beneficial for times the main vehicle is Found On Road Dead.

We called it Fix Or Repair Daily.

If the Expedition cannot pull a heavy trailer, there's a category of lightweight trailers that are handy. Personally I recommend getting a trailer that is both lightweight and provides the space you need. For weeklong vacations you won't need a gigantic fifth wheel or long trailer: those are designed for full-timing or people who like to take their entire house with them  Shorter trailers are more than satisfactory for the part-time vacationers. You learn to edit out your baggage to what you need minimally and focus on the experiences outside of the vehicle. The travel trailer is for having a place to sleep and sometimes eat. The vacation is to see places and visit people, not to set up housekeeping in a different spot.

You can buy a good used light weight trailer at local dealers or through the internet (buyers should employ the usual cautions). You can get an idea of prices at these two sites.

I'm going to add the category of lightweight collapsible trailers like the Trailmanor and tent campers like the Jay Sport. These fold down to a low profile for better gas mileage but open up to two full sized sleeping areas for families.

Told the wife we should wait till the boys are grown and get one just big enough for us. The boys said they would still be living at home. I explained to them I knew that and we would be taking weeks away from THEM! They would be old enough to pay the bills and feed the dog. We would come back every few weeks or so to check up on them. 8-)

If they won't move out, we will go on "vacation" as often as needed.

Decided against the Expedition. Will buy a good used full sized cargo van and convert it to a miniRV.

Sounds like a good plan. I've asked around and people tell me the Expeditions can have "problems". When you convert the van you can get ideas from the Class B camper vans. Some take two folding sofas and put them opposite each other for passengers (with seatbelts attached) then at night they can fold down into one king sized bed or stay in place for two twins.

You can get the sofas online just look for RV folding sofas (or similar) as your search term. Leisure Travel Vans website can give you some ideas for a DIY conversion.
