Today .. Monarch or Viceroy?

Outside my window, i’m not sure which. i hope he visits again, i’m hoping it’s a Monarch :D
i know they’re big.

i’ve thought of planting milkweed to attract them.
Milkweed grew everywhere when i was young. Considered a weed.

We saw many Monarchs back then. Glorious creatures!

Today .. a yard guy+his son helped with weeds and overgrown plants, much needed, with so much heat+rain!
Hopefully, August will be drier, August often brings drought. This year, i hope so!

Unfortunately, the weed eater threw a rock that SHATTERED a panel of a sliding glass patio door!
It looks a lot like the shattered ipad screen. Total accident. i heard it hit. i felt so bad for them.

i called my home insurance. i originally had a low deductible, over the years, they don’t allow those anymore.
The contractor said he has a high deductible. i told him we’ll work something out. He told me not to pay them for today, yet.

All that work, in the heat!

First, i have to find out cost of repair. i have no idea.
Meanwhile, they put some sort of clear plastic on, hopefully to keep it from falling apart onto the ground.

As they left, i asked the son if he was married? Yes.
i told him, good. i’ll take their first born child!

First estimate, $1155 total.
i’m trying to be in denial. My son texted, “mom, you can’t live with it.” “i know.”

i need to get another estimate.
“i don’t want” these guys working for nothing. worse than that. they’ve worked for me before. no problems.

Most likely cheaper to replace the broken door than replace the glass. The challenge is finding the door for that model. Most likely not made any more. You can get a piece of Lexan or plex to go into it, but if it is insulated glass door, which most sliding doors are now, that would be a custom job and the labor would cost as much as a whole new door. If you need a whole new door, might be a good time to replace it with French doors. They are much better at keeping the cold out.

^^i’m pretty sure it’s a standard 6x6’ Andersen sliding glass door. Vinyl. Maybe about 20 years old, not older.

Ok. i have a call into Andersen.
Problem is, on that side of the house, a few feet away, there’s another one just like it. i think both in good shape.
Even if identical, one new door might not look great.

i wish they’d called in sick that day! :P
some days it’s just not worth it.
