If the mail wasn't so slow, I could mail you my drill guide. I'm not likely to use it again at this stage in my life. It was used on lots of cabinets in my heydays.Robert wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 10:44 amWe have handles to put on. Last night at 5:45 PM we walked into Lowes to get the drill guide. WE asked for help since they were closing at 6 PM for New Years Eve. They showed they had 63 in stock. After three people helping and no one able to find one, we finally left at 6:05 PM empty handed. I hoped to have the handles installed today, since I have to go back to work tomorrow. Such is life.
I have always found that whenever you need help, it is best to be there at closing time. You get massive help and can get done very quickly.![]()

Re: Today ...
Today .. bitter cold+wind. -6F presently, temps expected to drop until about 8am.
wind 20mph from the west, wind chill -30F presently. humidity 71%
forecasts are we’ll have a few days of this .. then back to the teens for highs.
The prairie can be tough.
i open the door that goes to the garage when temps get into single digits.
it’s mostly insulated, with an insulated garage door, there’s a sink, plus water softener, it’s not terrible to heat in the worst times.
i leave kitchen sink cabinet doors open.
and pray for the power to stay on.
with zero and below, it doesn’t take long to become catastrophic.
we don’t have snow cover right now.
snow acts as insulation in various ways - if it falls before the lowest temps.
it’s kind of hard to go to sleep, fearing a power outage.
Snoopy nails it

Have you thought of just using a space heater in the garage by the water units?

Re: Today ...
Been in Nashville this weekend. Wow, the Broadway is aptly named! Lined with neon country music bars. Loud music. There were throngs of people packed on the street. I guess Nashville is the bachelorette party capitol now, and that was evident with the groups of women all over. Very much a party atmosphere, with party buses and pedal busses going around filled with dancers and music and drinkers. Smell of marijuana wafting around. Reveling. Additionally there was a professional hockey game going on, which is right there in the same neighborhood. It is clearly a Caucasian cultural phenomenon. City of Music. Was accosted by only one drunk, who said he wanted to give me $1,000.
This morning, walked down Church Street looking for a church. On the way, I noticed that the Johny Cash museum and bar, and other bars are open this Sunday morning. But the first two churches I found were closed down. One was for lease, the others sign said the police would be called if you loitered.
As I walked past the old Grand Ole Opry, I noticed high above the entry of this ornate structure, that is said Union Gospel Tabernacle, 1892. Looks like just another religious building built and then repurposed for secular purposes: “ What was built as a religious meeting place for Nashvillians, became a different type of sanctuary that grew bigger than Ryman ever imagined.” Interesting also is the complex relationship between the performative singing of gospel songs on a stage and country music.
As I continued on, I found it apropos that the Broadway, was separated from Church Street only by Commerce Street.
Eventually I found the locked First Baptist Church and was let inside by an usher. Very massive, old, well kept building. No patriotism or even any flags of any sort anywhere in sight.
Good old fashioned hymn's led by a man beating time and nice huge instrumental accompaniment, with a large choir. A couple baptisms, good sermon. Very many people in attendance.
Was very refreshing to find a great Christian service and singing after last night’s observances on hedonistic Broadway and then seeing the closure of the other churches this morning. It is sad to see the increase in the partying standing in direct and stark contrast to the precipice decline in church attendance in this country.

Got the uppers in. Just need to do the backsplash and get the rest of the handles on. The backsplash my wife wants is the section just to the left of the stove.
Once that is done, I will move the gas fireplace and then put down the new floor.

Thank you for your journal of your experiences. I agree with your assessment of Nashville. Did you have to knock or did the ushers see you and let you inside the old church?RZehr wrote: ↑Sun Jan 14, 2024 2:14 pm Been in Nashville this weekend. Wow, the Broadway is aptly named! Re: Today ...
They were modern full glass doors. So I tugged on the handle, and the ushers inside could see me and they opened the door. I assume they keep the doors locked for safety reasons.MaxPC wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 3:28 pmThank you for your journal of your experiences. I agree with your assessment of Nashville. Re: Today ...
electric space heaters use so much power! $$$ it’s hard to find one under 1500 watts.
i’ve just found one at 400 watts, but have not decided to purchase it. i might try it.
we used to use a kerosene heater, i couldn’t get the last one i bought to work, i took it into the hardware store where i bought it, they couldn’t help, either.
my fav solution was using an incandescent light bulb in vulnerable spots, 25-40 watts is enough.
it’s amazing what a small amount of electricity can do.
i discovered my garage isn’t too bad to heat (by opening the kitchen door) one year when i was away mid-winter.
i set the thermostat at 55F, left the kitchen door open, and prayed. it worked out.
Today ..
heat wave! - hi temps are expected in the 20’s.
the bitter cold isn’t finished. i’ll try to start the car mid-day.
