Charley Pride, a son of sharecroppers who rose to become country music’s first Black superstar on the strength of hits including “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’” and “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” died on Saturday in hospice care in Dallas. He was 86.

Jeremy Westby, a publicist for Mr. Pride, said the cause was complications of Covid-19.

That's what you'll hear now for sure, the very first report I read, and I don't remember where it was, was that he died of pneumonia with complications from Covid. There are other 86 year-olds who regularly do not survive pneumonia, whether or not they had Covid. When I read the original report, I immediately expected that the media would soon not mention the pneumonia, and that is exactly what happened.
I wasn't there, I don't know how he died.

As a very young girl we had a Charlie Pride vinyl record of him doing hymns. My favorite was "Did You Think to Pray".

It still is one of my favorites and the message is timeless. The song was written by Mary Kidder sometime between 1820-1905

With covid vs from covid. This virus is like an unscrupulous lawyer who goes to great ends to free people he knows are "as guilty as sin". He doesn't kill people himself, but w/o him, many would not die.

It’s a bit like AIDS. Nobody has actually died from AIDS itself, but it decimates the immune system so that victims die from other illnesses, like pneumonia.
