My family is from the east coast- mid Atlantic. We eat very traditional foods for T'giving... rutabagas, creamed onions...
I don't think I've had those even once, let alone as a tradition.
You aren't missing a thing never having had the rutabagas. The creamed onions I grew up with and didn't like then but will eat some now with my meal tho not too many. They are baby onions- frozen pearl onions in a white sauce. You have to like onions. I have heard of others who have had them and just always thought everyone else ate them til I went to college.

I LOVE rutabagas- my grandma from eastern Canada made those to contribute to our Thanksgiving.
Never had the creamed onions but I live onions so will have to try.
