Hats Off wrote:Amanda's family will be moving to Markham this weekend as she has now been approved for the heart transplant list. Galen tripped and fell about three feet, face down and broke his left arm. His right arm is also sore so they will have to look to others to do the lifting and carrying.

The family spent a week travelling to the east coast but had to take it easy because he couldn't do a lot of driving at a time. The vacation served them well to take their minds off the waiting - they returned home on Sunday night just narrowly missing a tornado. On Monday morning they received the most welcome call from the hospital, putting an end to the waiting game.

God bless them and give them strength.

Amanda's Journey came to an end on Friday night some time between 9:30 and 12. The MCEC community around Markham had rallied around the family and a BBQ was being held at the home of Dale and Lois Reesor as a way for Galen's to become acquainted with the local Mennonites. Around 10:30, Amanda went to the bathroom while her sister, Vanessa followed her. Vanessa heard Amanda falling, but couldn't open the door so she ran crying for help. Amanda's Mom did CPR until a defib was brought in but her time had come.

We cry, not as those who have no hope, not for Amanda, but for ourselves and her parents, brothers and sisters. We understand the sorrow Jesus felt at Lazarus death and are comforted by Jesus words to one of the sisters as they wept. Amanda never expressed any fear of death. She had accepted Jesus as Saviour and was baptized on April 8, 2018. Brother Tom Todd baptized her and now is in charge of her burial.

Our hearts are broken for all the grieving family. God be with you, brother.

So in the end, their housing needs were met, the financial needs were met. They made the move to Markham to a house with a wooded area and a creek on one side and famland on the other. They spent about a week in this new home which they are now almost reluctant to leave. They have made some new friends; friends for a lifetime. God is good - the family was surrounded yesterday by hundreds of friends. Many flavours of Mennonites from Old Order to MCEC; many other churches were represented at the funeral; we were able to witness to a number of unbelievers.

Thanks to all here who prayed for us and their family through this difficult time.

We wept again as we watched and listened to this video tonight. When she was 10, Amanda gave her heart to the Lord. She was baptized at 13, and now at 14, God took her up on her offer - her heart is now His forever. We were hoping she would get a new heart - but she had a new heart already.

Hats Off wrote:Amanda Horst, 14 year old daughter of Galen and Patricia has just received the official diagnosis of Restrictive Cardiomyopathy. Doctors are recommending a heart transplant as soon as possible which would have to be done at Toronto Sick Children's Hospital and would require Amanda to be less than 2 hours from the hospital at all times. Galen has a business to run with one employee in addition to his 16 year old son. Their home is about 4 hours from the hospital.

Some significant questions and concerns:

Can they find an affordable place to stay in the city for a family with 7 children?
They currently live on top of a hill out in the country; they have some pigs, chickens, goats, a cow and some ducks. How long could they stand living in the city?
They have 2 or three dogs - the other livestock can be sold but what about the children's pets?
What do they do for church? If Galen drives back and forth every week so he can spend some time in the city with the family they won't be interested in driving 4 hours back for church every week.
What about the sixteen year old son? Does he just work when Galen is at work? What about the employee? Can he continue to work without supervision several days a week?
Where does the money come from to pay for the second home?
Can they leave Amanda in Toronto for brief periods with other volunteers who would keep her company?

They are letting the weekend go by; Amanda is at home and can do thinks like being a big sister to 4 younger sisters; she can wash dishes and help with the younger children's homework. She can't do anything strenuous - she experiences chest pains from over exertion. We will see what happens in the next days and weeks.
It’s been a year since Amanda received her diagnosis. God be with her loved ones.

Hats Off last posted Nov 25, 2019. It seems so much longer.
Hoping for his return.

For what it's worth, Amanda's parents just posted elsewhere that they are expecting a new baby. Grandma's, that's all I remember! No date, no gender, no hair colour yet.... :D
