When i was young, polio vaccines were very new, measles-mumps-chicken pox+others, vaccines not on the scene.

From my child’s pov, it seemed, “every spring” would bring waves of deadly diseases, most of us would get most of them.
i loved spring! but i “respected” it, some springs i was so sick i feared death (probably in fevers). bad flus were expected every year, often taking 10-14 days or more to recover. Families were bigger, with fathers present, “waves” of illness would go thru households.

Hard on mothers! that could be another topic. our no-nonsense mother was a tender, attentive angel of mercy in illness. whatever was required, 24/7.

My father suspected international mail spread pathogens. (prior to self-sealing/self-adhesive stamps+envelopes.)

i would hear that schoolrooms were pretty empty, with so many out at once. schools not closed.
teachers might allow some grace about school work! that was monumental, not taken for granted.

parents would pick up books+assignments, schoolwork done in bed, if need be. “you must keep up!”

o.the runny noses in classrooms. nothing stopped because people were sick. not just schools. often, there was pressure to be present “no matter what.”

later, teachers began asking each student to bring a box of tissues at the beginning of the year.
later, it was decided, fevers were reason to stay home. sometimes, grudgingly.

Life. An overall strange experience.

Last October, my wife and I purchased a small farm. Today the Dept. of Transportation came by to look at a tree that could become a road hazard in the future and told us that we have the biggest tree in the county.

I think that’s something to brag about!

(Now we have to figure out which one of two trees it is)

Today I began re-assembling the top of my motor in my pickup truck. I am retrofitting a TBI and ESC V6 engine back to carburetor and HEI distributor. All that is to say that I am replacing the computer controls for the ignition system and fuel system in my truck with a "vintage" carburetor and distributor. It seems strange to me to say that they are "vintage" since both were relatively new technology back in the 70s-90s when I was an auto tech. My truck hasn't run for 6 months while chasing gremlins and even a couple of local garages didn't want to tackle it, so I decided to jump in head first and do what I could to get it back on the road again. Here's hoping! The easy part is done, now to tackle the wiring...

And when the EMP hits, it will still run. Good choice.

It’s a cottonwood and we don’t know yet — we hope to get one off my wife’s horticulture friends out to take a look at it.

Manual pump as in fuel pump? I will still be using the high pressure fuel pump, (which is in the gas tank) but with a fuel pressure regulator that has a fuel return built in for residual fuel/pressure. BTW, I do live in the country.
