I wrote a post some time ago Science Requires Monotheism describing the cause of this.

I still read scientific papers, but I do this with an extremely critical eye, looking carefully at the methods to make sure that they are sound. Just saying "scientific paper X says Y" means nothing without checking the methods of the paper very carefully.
