PA Republican Governor candidate is Mennonite?

Post by Ken »

According to the authors at Current the Republican candidate for governor in PA, Doug Mastriano, attends a CMC church in Chambersburg PA.

The article has some interesting commentary about CMC beliefs and theology. I’m not sure how accurate it is.

Really. I had no idea. My wife's cousin's husband is senior pastor at Pond Bank.

I can’t say that 100% surprises me. I think CMC leadership would largely hold to the nonresistance described in the article, but CMC members cover a pretty wide range, maybe the widest range of all the conferences. Last I knew there were still churches in CMC that would probably align more with BMA, and many more CMC churches have members that would (especially older ones). And I’ve met CMC members that this guy would probably be right at home with (judging him entirely from the article).

I was once told by a member of a CMC church that he thinks they ought to take the “Mennonite” out of their church name because he doesn’t think that many people in the church really believe in nonresistance and that other Mennonite stuff anyway. (The pastor certainly believed it. And I think more people in the church did than he thought.)

Which is to say, I don’t know anything at all about Pond Bank, but I can guess a lot from the fact that they are Pond Bank Community Church.

(Also the CMC was not founded in 1958.)

He wouldn't be the first Anabaptist governor of Pennsylvania.

Pond Bank does not have "Mennonite" in their name anymore. It is "Pondbank Community Church"

Attending doesn’t equate to membership.
He doesn’t seem to refer to his membership in public? Others have grabbed onto “something to talk about?”

He doesn’t have a legacy Menno name. Does he??
