Case in point, California has more registered Republicans than any other state. Doesn’t seem to matter much there.

Of course it matters. There are 12 Republican Congressmen from California including Kevin McCarthy. And lots of Republicans holding state and local office all across the state.

It doesn't currently matter when it come to the electoral college or Senate, that is true. Although that is a fairly recent political development. I'm old enough to remember both Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan who were both Republican politicians from California who both won the state as well as the presidency. More recently, Republicans like Arnold Schwarzenegger managed to win statewide office. He won re-election over his Democratic opponent in 2006 by nearly 20 points in a year that Republicans struggled nationwide. So Republicans can win in California. A corrupt real estate developer from NYC and now Florida is probably not going to get the job done.
