The theology of secretary Hegseth

Post by barnhart »

Secretary of war, Peter Hegseth recently made remarks at the national prayer breakfast to great applause. Here are a few excerpts that caught my ear.
"Not only are our warriors armed with the arsenal of freedom, we are ultimately armed with the arsenal of faith and have been since the beginning."

"The willingness to make sacrifices on behalf of one's country is born in one thing, a deep an abiding belief in God's love for us and his promise of eternal life. This passage says for whoever will save his life will loose it and whoever looses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. The warrior is willing to lay down his life for his unit, his country and his creator, that warrior finds eternal life."

Virtually all Christians would agree with this statement. Anabaptists who are still conservative enough to hold to nonresistance wouldn’t.

It is pagan to the core. It is misappropriation of that passage of Scripture.

Salvation by works. Most wouldn't agree, I hope.

Very few in the military are willingly sacrificing their lives. They are trying to sacrifice the lives of the people deemed "enemies."

You would think the reformed tradition with it's hypersensitivity to works salvation, to the point they can hardly bear talk of obeying Jesus, would offer some resistance.

Faith without works is dead though.

So is faith with evil works.

I recently listened to an interview debate featuring the founder of Sec. Hegseth's church, Doug Wilson defending his political/religious program. Several times he offered this explanation, "We need to stop doing the things that make God angry."

While I agree that would be good, I can't help but hear the paganism behind it. How much distance is between that motivation and throwing virgins into volcanoes to appease the gods.

If we follow Jesus, we obey him because we love him.

Well evil is subjective to Gods understanding, I realize he is not Snabaptist but from the beginning of the Reformation, there were different interpretations- example Baptists then nor now agree with Anabaptist regarding military service. I realize “here” on this forum Baptists and other (except Jehoveh Witness) denominations would not find it evil depending- all presidents have been Commander in Chief if the Military.

Sounds like the same logic that brought us the crusades.
