Because that is the alternative. Pedophilia isn't about forgiveness for some crime you did in the past. It is about what you are going to CONTINUE to do until someone stops you. This isn't about any old crime like bank robbery or even murder. It is specifically and only about ongoing child abuse and pedophilia.
The reason for this serious problem in the Catholic Church can be found in the unbiblical requirement of mandatory celibacy for priests. If Peter was supposedly the first pope and was married, what was the basis for mandatory celibacy?

I did a little research and found it was the Lateran Council in the 12th century that established this rule, which is not even close to the time of Jesus' ministry.
That's not the only reason. Other denominations like Baptists have also had alarming epidemics of child sexual abuse.

But the Catholic church has no doubt made it worse with its celibacy requirement since that is more likely to result in more sexually frustrated gay priests than if priests were allowed and encouraged to have married lives.

Wow, I didn't know the Baptist Church also suffered from this painful scourge. I'd like to know more. Could you share a link or something so I can learn more?

Google is your friend here. It has been much in the news over the past decade. For example:

Be cautious with google. i use it, with caution. It’s biased. Alternatives are coming along.

It’s been discussed a lot on forum.
Every entity is vulnerable to the worst predatory sins, sadly, including Anabaptists.
Public schools, churches, sports clubs, scouting clubs, families, healthcare, i can’t think of any that have not been harmed by carnal sin.

This was one of Martin Luther’s complaints hundreds of years ago.

(i believe) the internet in the 1990’s made THE big difference in bringing it into the light of day.
1) victims were able to connect, 2) perps couldn’t hide.

(for me) a fascinating aspect of predatory abuse is how SIMILAR the patterns of abusers, no matter who or where.
THEY LIE. They intimidate. They threaten. They deny. They discredit victims. And more. They all use the same tactics.

Until the internet.

The similarities boggle my mind. In all of history. Same thing. Madness.

Yes, you're right, now that you mention Anabaptist communities. I remember the perverse and evil case that occurred in the Manitoba colony in Bolivia. I personally only learned about it through the internet. Unfortunately, the internet has practically become social media, and it seems to me that it brings more negative things than positive.

But the internet as a decentralized database, and used wisely, is a wonderful tool.

It’s really painful, we’ve had some painful topics on forum.
If you’d like, i could probably PM with a couple that come to mind. (Too painful to activate.)

The internet is a mixed bag, for sure.
Years ago, ohio jones compared it with the advent of Roman Roads, i think a good analogy.

i’d like to return to family centered desktops, and phones without cameras or internet. esp for benefit of children and teens.

The original forum (MD) was mostly family desktops, mostly teens and young ones, it was a blast.
i was so hoping younger sibs would fill in as active members left for school, work, marriage. i guess many things happened, including changing technology, younger sibs didn’t happen. MD began as a teen experiment. By the time i registered, it was mixed, with more elders around. Some here were original.

In the world, some folks really want to dial back tech, esp for children+teens. i hope for the best.
i’m thankful my daughter was ahead of the curve for her daughter, if only all parents would be so careful.
