I've literally never heard of it outside of David French's columns and your posts on MennoNet (and a handful of other posters who seem near-obsessed with it). I'm not convinced at all that it's significant or that it matters. And no, it doesn't need "pushed back on" any more than a zillion other things wrong with Doug Wilson's Reformed theology, starting with his odd practice of serving communion to infants. (But, hey, that's something the Easterns do too.)Szdfan wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 7:33 pm Christian nationalism isn’t just Doug Wilson or a small church in Idaho. Dominionist groups are growing in influence (through publishing, media, think tanks and politics) while many conservatives minimize it. That’s why French and others feel the need to push back.

The fact that you haven’t heard of something doesn’t make it less real. These movements are well documented. It’s really up to you to read about them. Doing your homework isn’t my responsibility.JohnH wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 8:57 pmI've literally never heard of it outside of David French's columns and your posts on MennoNet (and a handful of other posters who seem near-obsessed with it). Certainly, in these times when “any airtime is good airtime” (for opportunists) reflects this.
Also, certainly, silence can be the wrong choice.
It takes discernment, which is really a gift of the Spirit. Pray for the Spirit!
In my experience, witnessing elders who had first-person experienced great traumas of the two world wars, and much more,
these folks understood the necessity of tolerating things they did NOT want, NOT confusing tolerance with complicity.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

If silence is so powerful, I’m curious why you felt the need to say something here.temporal1 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 9:33 pmThe power of silence shouldn’t be underestimated.JohnH wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 8:57 pmI've literally never heard of it outside of David French's columns and your posts on MennoNet (and a handful of other posters who seem near-obsessed with it). It’s true I have a strong aversion to French and always have, even when he was writing at National Review.barnhart wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 4:37 pmI am continually surprised by strength of your distaste for David French. His conservative credentials could hardly be stronger right up to the point of not voting for President Trump or supporting MAGA. He has spent years arguing all the way to the supreme court for religious rights and free speech, spoke out as conservative at Harvard decades before Charlie Kirk, started the first prolife club at Harvard... I find him lucid, logical and persuasive. It's hard for me to imagine how he gets under your skin. I mostly listen to his podcasts and you mostly read him, maybe that's the difference.HondurasKeiser wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 1:00 pmWhat I’ve suggested is that AW (thanks OJ) and David French have made Christian Nationalism their newest favorite hobby horse. Mr. French, could find Christian Nationalism in the instruction manual of a toaster oven. It gets tiresome and absurd.

So you thought of the French Press as more of a drip rather than something to pore over?HondurasKeiser wrote: ↑Sun Oct 12, 2025 10:03 am It’s true I have a strong aversion to French and always have, even when he was writing at National Review.

Re: Christian Nationalism
Something that’s a complete laughingstock is that we have a military lawyer (whose office presided over finding legal justifications for all the horrific things we did in Iraq) lecturing us on ethics and morality.
He should repent of what he did in the armed forces and make amends.

Yes; I wasn't espressly connecting it with National Review. Your not caring beans about his writing on the whole gave me grounds for brewing up some puns.HondurasKeiser wrote: ↑Sun Oct 12, 2025 3:39 pmThat was his column at the Dispatch if I remember correctly.ohio jones wrote: ↑Sun Oct 12, 2025 1:41 pmSo you thought of the French Press as more of a drip rather than something to pore over?HondurasKeiser wrote: ↑Sun Oct 12, 2025 10:03 am It’s true I have a strong aversion to French and always have, even when he was writing at National Review.
