I’ll let y’all read more about what I found here because my wife is ringing that supper bell.

To me heresy is no small thing. The New Testament requires dealing with it when it “shows up” and is also listed among the works of “the flesh” in Galatians. At the point it was introduced the church at large had allowed all kinds of heretical & false teaching & prophecies to where it just seems like no big deal- but it is, it’s a poor witness to claim to be led by truth but sected out to be an unrecognizable unified Body of Christ. Wet blanket but I think that is why Scripture teaches to “address” heresy.
The problem then is who decides what is heresy. I think a lot of things in the charismatic movement are heresy and false doctrine, to give one example.

We left the Pentecostal/charismatic movement when our church (from our point of view) started embracing people that we were not comfortable with ( we were not into the “Toronto Blessing”, the New Apostles, the Bethel Church seemingly strange fire, etc) and that led to us seeking Anabaptism but to this day my husband & I still firmly believe there are & were true spiritual gifts that Apistle Paul encouraged, we truly had evidence of them and at the same time acknowledge that Satan had always counterfeit the true. That is why daily praying for discernment is so important.

You ask a good question. Who is truly qualified to say what heresy is? There is criteria.

Googling said this:

In the Bible, heresy is defined as a teaching or practice that deviates from foundational Christian doctrines, causes divisions, and often denies the nature or work of Jesus Christ. Derived from the Greek word hairesis (meaning "choice," "faction," or "sect"), it refers to divisive, self-chosen opinions that fracture the church.Key Aspects of Heresy in the BibleDefinition & Origin: Hairesis originally meant a sect or party, but in the New Testament, it evolved to mean a destructive, divisive doctrine, as seen in 2 Peter 2:1 and 1 Corinthians 11:19.Theological Error: It is a deliberate, persistent denial of essential truths, such as the deity of Christ, the Trinity, or salvation by grace.Divisive Nature: Paul lists "heresies" (or "factions," "sects") alongside sinful behaviors because they create discord in the church (Galatians 5:20).Distinction: While error can be unintentional, heresy generally implies an obstinate, willful, or proud persistence in false teaching.Biblical Usage ExamplesActs 5:17, 15:5, 24:5: Used to describe the "sect" of the Sadducees, Pharisees, or Christians ("Nazarenes").1 Corinthians 11:19: Paul uses it to describe factions causing divisions within the church community.Galatians 5:20: Included in the list of the "works of the flesh".2 Peter 2:1: Describes "destructive heresies" brought by false teachers.Synonyms and Related TermsFalse Teaching/Doctrine: Contrary to apostolic teaching (2 Peter 2:1).Divisions/Factions/Sects: (Hairesis or schisma) Referring to groups causing discord (1 Corinthians 11:19).Different Gospel: A perversion of the true gospel (Galatians 1:6-7).Sedition: Listed with heresy in Galatians 5:20, implying active rebellion or promotion of division.

I don’t think Google is the authority on what heresy and sound doctrine are.

I doubt they made it up themselves. I could provide the orthodox definition.

I see them as potentially one of the groups of Christians that are more "earnest" than mainline/evangelical Christians. A bit like Conservative Anabaptists, Holiness, Fundamentalist, etc... They don't mind being "different" from mainstream society and more intentional about their faith. I admire them for this.

They take their sabbath VERY seriously. They really set it aside as a day of rest, fellowship, worship, etc. They spend time together communally. I admire them for this.

I don't agree with their Saturday sabbath (as opposed to Sunday), but I don't particularly think this is really wrong of them.

They interpret God's intent for the Law in a way that I certainly do not, so I can't see eye to eye with them on that.

The "Adventist" part of their name refers to their expectation of Christ's reappearing. This is a big part of their culture, and it's fairly easy to see that this emphasis is what has led to so may heretical splinter groups like the Branch Davidians and others.

They started out as a heterodox group, not accepting the Trinity, but they came around on that. I admire them for this. It's not easy to change one's theology like that. The Oneness Pentecostals aren't likely to accept Trinitarian theology, for example, because their theology is what makes them unique. I like that the 7th Day Adventists kept things that made them unique (the "7th Day" ad the "Adventist"), but still came back to orthodox theology on God.

The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly.

Are you accusing the JW church or the 7thDA church of heresy? I'm not sure because of the comment you're replying to, it could be either.

This video gives more details about how one might taxonomically put them under the same "umbrella", but they are still very different churches.

Well both & others are considered heretical (commonly known). To believe 7th Day is not heretical, you’d have to except the (false) prophetess so then we should all be 7th Day. Both cannot be right.

It's pretty commonly accepted that JWs are heterodox, but It's only the particularly curmudgeony Christians that will accuse 7DA as heretics.
As I noted in my comment, their origins included a heterodox theology of the Trinity, but they have since amended this understanding, bringing them back in line with orthodox Christianity.
As I also noted in my comment, they have produced lot of heretical offshoots, which in my mind makes them a risky endeavor; but it doesn't mean the, themselves, are heretics. It's another way "common knowledge" might be confused about the 7DA, mixing them up with Branch Davidians or something.

Or maybe like a Catholic encyclopedia comparing all Anabaptists to the Muenster rebellion.

I found this at the bottom of JohnL's link. It might be "commonly known" as you sa, but it is nonetheless inaccurate. It is common confusion, not common knowledge.
atoday.org wrote:To the rest of Americans the two denominations [7DA and JW] are seen as about the same size (each roughly a half percent of the total population) and both are seen as outsiders to the mainstream of American culture. In fact, surveys have shown that many Americans confuse the two, telling interviewers that Seventh-day Adventists do not believe in blood transfusions (despite the fact that the denomination sponsors one of the largest hospital systems in the country and a noted medical school at Loma Linda University in California). In fact, Jehovah’s Witnesses generally do not participate in higher education and Seventh-day Adventists not only operate a dozen fully-accredited colleges and universities, but teach the importance of education.
