Masculinity

Post by Bootstrap »

What do Mennonites and Anabaptists teach about masculinity?

How does that relate to the (1) gender-fluid world of the left and (2) the Worldwide Wrestling Foundation testosterone fetishes of the right?

Are we secure in our masculinity and femininity?

I can't recall, when I attended the MB church, any specific teaching about masculinity.

No explicit teaching on it, because it isn’t necessary in a healthy culture.

We would teach not to watch worldly entertainments like World Wrestling Entertainment.

I grew up wrestling and have done a lot of running. I didn't think I saw that as central to my masculinity.

One day, I had a surgery that meant no running, no lifting, etc. for quite a while. When I watched my wife pick up the dog food bag, I realized that hurt, that it made me feel like something was wrong with me as a man. Silly, but I think it's something I believed with my heart, though not with my mind.

I’m going to assume you didn’t grow up doing pro wrestling.

Um, no. The real thing. As did my father. In real wrestling, you are on a mat, rules are strict, injuries are rare.

FWIW, my father did do one exhibition match with Gorgeous George, where they gave him a script and taught him how to lose theatrically. He loved to tell the story to anyone who didn't know that World Wide Wrestling is all fake.

In a healthy culture, I think we pick role models who are good fathers, generous, using their gifts for the Body of Christ, learned in Scripture, concerned with the things of God.

Jesus and Paul are also great role models for real masculinity. So are John and Peter.

Since you are bringing left and right into it. I find it interesting that now that we have electoral field is fully fleshed out we are seeing two competing versions of masculinity on full display.

One is angry, whiny and full of grievances of every type
The other is centered on family and being competent and helpful to others without seeking credit.

I agree with the first. I disagree with the second. I'm not even sure what masculinity means in parts of LGBTQ+, or how that relates to family and being helpful to others without seeking credit.

I think we need to promote healthy masculinity. And that includes saying there is something called masculinity, rooted in creation, as the Bible teaches.
