Let's talk about drugs!

Post by steve-in-kville »

This may become a series of polls, we shall have to see. Some conversations I've had both online as well as in person planted the seed to this. It appears some circles really hammer this home, other avoid it entirely. This poll references the abuse of such things. For example, having your weed card to treat an illness does not apply.

What subjects have we heard over the pulpit, in school and/or in the home in regards to substance abuse?

Technically, we hear it within the context of homilies on the mortal sins.

I went to public school, so I've been hearing about it since President Reagan launched his alleged "war on drugs." In a plain Anabaptist setting, beyond some scripture being read, not much.

I went through the D.A.R.E. program in the early 90s. We had the dangers of drugs drummed into us in public school.

I grew up from a young age hearing about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco. Went to public school and beginning in high school had movies and much education about marijuana and especially heroine as that was the big one in the 60s/early 70s.
Prescription drugs didn't come to many people's attention til later but working as a nurse learned it early on.

I went to a rural/suburban school. Our biggest "issue" might have been weed. I'm sure there was harder stuff in use, but didn't hear about it.

Now that I think of it... we could tell who had dope in their lockers when the borough police, township police as well as the state police cars would pull in the bus round-a-bout.... all of a sudden certain students needed to urgently use the bathroom! We were held in our classrooms while the cops ran the dogs through the lockers. Good times.

Mostly that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and how we take care of our bodies is important to God. Specific things from scripture would be drinking wine and eating in excess. I consider eating certain foods ( a sugar high) as a drug that many of us are addicted to and church suppers can be a primary place where this indulging occurs. However, I haven't or don't recall a sermon on this.

Caffeine would be in the same category, I suppose?

Same. It didn't seem to take and indeed became a point of mockery and sarcasm as our cohort entered our teen years.

I’m not sure that I was ever taught or warned against any of these with much specificity, but I do know that I have told my children that I’m not necessarily gonna give them big spiels about the evil of all drugs but that they better never touch opioids or heroin.
