Haven't done one of these in a while. Vote and comment as needed.

So far, we're 100% early birds.

I'm an early bird. My wife is the opposite.

Normally we are up at dawn. Today, we are awaiting on some green beans to finish in the canner. I am about to go help my wife lift that canner off of the stove: I think it was made from a Challenger A30 Cruiser Tank. I keep thinking how much easier it would be to just buy a forklift to move it.

We were gifted with 300 pounds (in ten pound bags) of potatoes once. I spent the next two weeks canning potatoes. Two canner loads each day after work, 14 quart per load.

I couldn't eat anything involving potatoes for three months after that. The smell of cooking them turned me off. :o

I am assuming you are using a pressure canner, as they are very heavy. I just turn the burner off and wait until the pressure goes down. If you ever saw a photo of a pressure canner that exploded, you would understand why they are the equivalent of Challenger A30 Cruiser Tank.

Yup, just knock the heat off and wait. My MIL (who has a much smaller canner) has been known to put it in the sink and run water over it. As far as explosions... my wife won't use a pressure canner. When she was a teenager, her mom's locked up and they started to evacuate the kitchen when the safety valve left go. She'll water bath but the pressure canning falls to me, that of which I enjoy 8-)

Thank you Grace and Steve. Mission accomplished.
Yes, the heat had been turned off. The pressure release had activated. We were waiting for it to cool down enough to move it to the sink so that my wife would not attempt it by herself in the morning. I had to be at the hardware store when it opened at 7 am and my wife would not have been able to make breakfast until "The Tank" had been relocated.

I have never experienced having to do that but I will say that it would take quite a bit for me to be turned against potatoes.

I can go either early or late. I'm an early bird lately. The city is quiet before the sun comes up.
