I attended the first time while I was a College Freshman (Spring semester, 1975), and not again until many years later, when it was held in a local congregation here in Holmes County (Grace Bible Church, 1991, I believe). But I did attend a similar seminar at a small Baptist congregation in Wahoo, Nebraska (Calvary Chapel, as I recall), during the summer of 76. That seminar was actually by the man from whom Bill 'stole' most of that material.

The main thing I remember about the Basic Youth Conflicts Seminar is the way it was given so rapid fire - Scripture references only, with Bill's own description of each one, with no time to look it up, or consider if what he said was correct. Sure, I still had the material afterwards, but I never went back & studied any of it. He was also big on defining words in his own way, like the way he defined 'defraud' in a way that was very different from the way in which it is used (correctly) in the KJV and in other translations. [He said it is to 'create desires in another person which cannot rightfully be fulfilled', where as it is generally used in the Scripture to mean 'to deprive one's marriage partner of their rightful (physical) fulfillment in the marital relationship'.]

Overall the impact on my life was positive. I did observe a lot of negative impacts from many who followed blindly without the healthy skepticism. So I can't hate on the material, but I don't promote it either.
Wow this could almost have been written by me. we must share more than just the name. My Dad too was a healthy sceptic particularly on the way Gothard taught authority issues. A half life time later I am convinced that those teachings have had more of a negative influence on the Anabaptist church then we would like to admit at times.
This made me smile. I don't think we're related, although my brother Roger lives pretty close to you all :)

Oh we are related. No doubt about that but probably not closer than 8th or 9th cousins. And Roger is your brother. Interesting. Next time you are up stop in and say Hi.

Ms. Izzie wrote:I think it is better to frame our relationships in love and submission, rather than authority and submission. Jesus is our example for this. Although He had authority (He was God), He did not count it as something to be grasped, instead He humbled Himself in love for us. We love Him because He first loved us. He showed us He loves us because He gave His life for us.

My husband has taught me the most about this-- by his example.
I agree with the bolded regarding the relationship between husband and wife. When I mentioned hierarchy, I was referring to the one of authority that exists in the relationships between parents and non-adult children. Quite a few parents let their children run the family instead of asserting the right hierarchy of parents actually teaching the children how to behave, how to walk with Christ, etc.

It's fine with me.

One of the stranger things I have run into is conservative Anabaptists who still insist that Bill Gothard never did anything wrong.

You can usually spot them by an entire bookshelf of official-looking books and workbooks and binders full of cassette tapes.
