This raises an ethical question of, if one doesn't feel like one should own a certain firearm, should you sell it to someone else? I decided I would prefer to sell it to someone I knew was a responsible gun owner where it would be stored safely and less likely to end up in criminal hands.ohio jones wrote:I've heard CMC members are good people to sell to.ragpicker wrote:Anyone want to buy my subcompact?

Always an important question when God asks us to get rid of something. The wisdom of asking the question and the surrender to God’s answer are important to me.Josh wrote:This raises an ethical question of, if one doesn't feel like one should own a certain firearm, should you sell it to someone else? I've been thinking of this myself. The guns my dad passed on to me were of interest to my younger son, but he was killed in an auto accident last December. My older son does not have much interest in them.ragpicker wrote:Always an important question when God asks us to get rid of something. I rarely hunt. I do dispose of a few pests that attack our garden most years, so the .22 gets used regularly enough.
Should I sell them? Destroy them? Destroy them publicly in some "swords into plowshares" type demonstration? Or allow my older son to dispose of them as he sees fit when he inherits them?

Not an apples/apples comparison, but some years ago while moving I found my baseball card collection from the 80's and early 90's. I asked a minister if it was wrong to sell them, as the church we were part of at the time condemned such things. He was okay with the idea. Unfortunately I discovered they were all but worthless... at the time. I still have them!

Good questions. I have opinions but I am not your Holy Spirit. I appreciate your consideration of the issues though.JimFoxvog wrote:I've been thinking of this myself. I have an old battered .338 Win Mag that I left in Alaska when I moved and it has been sitting in my brother's storage locker ever since. He doesn't want it because he doesn't hunt and doesn't have room for it on his boat where he lives. I think he keeps a marine shotgun on the boat instead. Mostly bear protection when he's out exploring. I told him to just put it on ArmsList or Gunbroker if he wants to get rid of it, or else just trade it to someone. Craigslist doesn't allow firearm sales. His liveaboard community of fisherman and vagabonds are always trading things. Someone will take it in exchange for a couple of fresh Chinook salmon or king crab.ragpicker wrote:Good questions. I have opinions but I am not your Holy Spirit. From what I understand, it is mostly only handguns that tend to wind up being used in crimes or gun accidents. Not rifles. I think there many local organizations that will take handguns and destroy them if that is what you want. Some police departments will do it. Some won't. You could always call your local police station and ask. There is also this national organization that will dispose of unwanted weapons for you: https://www.unwantedfirearms.org/

I'm more than capable of destroying a firearm myself, but I was questioning the ethics of selling it a profit to someone else. I decided that's more than okay, since I'm not ethically opposed to my neighbours or the police being armed.
(Disposing of ammunition is a more serious problem, it's reasonable for lots of people to have thousands and thousands of rounds. If I couldn't sell of them, I have no idea how I'd get rid of that much ammo. Places that will get rid of unwanted guns don't take ammo for various reasons.)

Our local HAZMAT materials disposal that occurs once a month at the transfer station will take old ammo along with your old paint and toxic chemicals. Maybe yours will too.Josh wrote:I'm more than capable of destroying a firearm myself, but I was questioning the ethics of selling it a profit to someone else. Otherwise maybe call the police or a local gun range and see if they will take it.
