One serious issue in discussing this topic is I think terms are being used indiscriminately, not to anyone’s blame.

From one perspective liberal, progressive “anabaptists” can be called anabaptist or Mennonite because of their roots.
But I consider them aside from their peace stance just another wish washy liberal Protestant.

What is Plain? It is easy to agree OOA are Plain. Is Eastern? NWF? Is Pilgrim? Etc.

Very group has this issue. One hardly recognizes a Traditional Latin Mass parish as being the same religion as some of the vague new Mass suburban parishes that anyone walking into not reading the name would think is a Protestant church.

I think the old orders face a grave challenge from the smart phone. If they hold onto their outward practices only are they still Amish in 30 years? Or do we accept it is the outward life style that makes them Amish if their church and religious life change dramatically?

I do not pretend to have the answer

Anabaptists have often been named or categorized by outsiders, after all we don't have a pope or council of bishops to decide these things. The categories and names adopted by Ernie were invented from thin air by Stephen Scott to organize his research.
Liberal mennonites generally don't use that descriptor and Old Orders generally don't call themselves that either. Often such names and categories are applied from the outside, both by admirers and detractors. Even the terms Anabaptist, Mennonite and Amish fall in this category.

What does PCM stand for and are they all horse and buggy?

In the past on this forum, we have identified the word "plain" as those who live simple, non-luxurious lives.
We have identified "Plain" as groups that have an expected dress code and who eschew fashion. "Plain" includes head-covering for women and no head-covering for men during worship. No jewelry. Modest clothing. etc.

I find the opposite. Old Order Mennonites and Amish that we interact with often use that term.

Interesting. The first hand experience I have is with VA old order mennonites and PA old order Amish and in both cases the term they have for old order is "Us".

Generally speaking they are all horse and buggy. They are substantially different than both Old Orders and Intentionalists.

They are the fastest growing group, particularly if one considers the Swartzies part of the PCM, which there is a decent case to be made for.
