Christian ethics and theology with an Anabaptist perspective

Which group is “moderate” compared to the “conservatives” above it and the “liberals” below it?

oj, would you consider adding “Poll: “ to your subject line?
there is a little icon for it, but, the word is easier to spot. :)
(lots of threads with similar subject lines.)

This is a good idea. We should add the word Poll to all our poll threads.

I guess I overlooked that because the thread I was mirroring didn't have "Poll:" in the title. Of course, it also didn't have a poll, which is partly why I started this one. At this point the only place I can add it is in the heading of this post, where it will not be all that visible.

Also note there's a bar graph icon in the list of threads (below the thread title, to the left of the OP's name) for threads that have polls.

Really? "licentious" is the adjective you would use for MCUSA? "Tolerant" or "progressive" perhaps. Maybe "mainstream" or "worldly" But "licentious" a pretty judgemental term. Would you also apply it to every other mainstream protestant denomination?

Gene is being tongue-in cheek (see the rest of his post(s)). I read him as trying to pillory the use of both "licentious" and "legalistic."

"Legalistic" is also a pretty judgmental term. Though I certainly encounter it more often than "licentious," especially as someone who has gone from Protestant to conservative Anabaptist (legalism!), to find CA's calling more conservative CA's legalistic.

I did not catch that. I am/was MCUSA and when he posted that, I thought, Yep. Kind of accurate.

Ken, let me help you a bit.

Any group more conservative than one’s own is legalistic, has a bunch of rules, relies on works for salvation - and they are probably not saved at all.

Any group more progressive than one’s own is a hotbed of misbehaviour, where “anything goes”, a place full of cheap grace - and they are probably not saved at all.

One finds the perfect balance, however, in wherever one’s own opinions and preferences have landed you.

I have yet to meet members in a CA church who don’t think they’re born again.

There will always be someone more conservative than you and someone more liberal than you. Find a place where you can be happy and be put to work. I wish I would have learned that many years ago.
